OK...so I've read several of the posts and it seems that the popular consensus is that mixing using speakers/monitors is the way to go. I mentioned in my early post that I have a small (pre-amp?) and speakers but use the headphones to mix.
I just played my song through the speakers which I rarely do...guess what? doesn't sound half bad. But before I ask my last question here's what equipment I'm using.
REAPER recording software (love it!) I have 3 gigs ram and hard-drive, computer works fine and I've got 25 tracks on one of my songs. I know it sounds like a lot but heh works great (I just keep saving alot, in case). have 7 guitars plus 9 vocals and all the other band instruments.
Headphones: Audio-Technica ATH-M20 (I know, not great, but they sound good)
Speakers...(inherited from my parents, bought in the late 60's): KLH, Model Twenty, 4 OHMS (no wattage is shown). They each have a 6" and 10" speaker. They have a toggle in the rear enabling 3 positions: Top= High/Normal, Middle= Frequency/Decrease and the bottom is Level/Increase.
When toggling between these 3 I don't seem to hear any difference...
ideas why?
Lastly I use a Sony "Compact Disc Deck Receiver" 60hz, 35 watts, sounds whimpy but it drives the speakers no problem.
I go from the line-out on my computer to the Sony and then out to the
KLH's. It sounds pretty good and the Sony has no problem pushing the speakers but the song sounds a little flat or to use a more professional term, not as "Sweet" as the headphones do. I think I can make the proper EQ changes to the mix to get the right sound as I listen with the speakers but that will change the "Sweet" sound I'm getting with the headphones.
So here's the question... The Sony seems to do fine with pushing the speakers, even when I crank up the volume, but do I leave what little bass/treble the Sony has alone on "0" adjustment so I get a true-er sound from the mix? Or do I need another type of I guess you'd call the Sony a pre-amp? or just continue using the Sony. Usually when I want to hear my mix I'll burn it , take it to my Tundra (pickup) which has pretty good sound and see what it sounds like, it sounds pretty much like the Sony/speaker set-up except I can mess with the bass, treble, low's, mid's and high's (but obviously I can't mix in my tundra unless it was all I owned and lived in it, which may be not to far down the road unless I get a job) aagh!
Anyway...Also I am planning on getting my songs professional mastered, probably at Airshow Mastering in Boulder. Have good references from a friend who used them and talked to one of the guys there. they said send them a sample, great idea!
Anyway, any comments on my equipment, etc. would be greatly appreciated. PS.. A little background on myself. I've been a musician for several years and have been involved with and used soundboards, etc. so I'm not a novice when it comes to knowing what I like as far as sound EQ-ing, etc., so... is going from headphones to speakers taking it to the next level or is using both OK and does my equipment work? HELP! thanks!
