I have gone back to playing my harp acoustically in the rack. The past few weeks were fun messing with the amplified sound but it just doesn't hold my interest like the acoustic sound. Walter

I got into going out a ways on some of these. I love the simple stuff because it still has endless unexplored roads and the all live in real time 1 man band lets me go down these roads. Walter

I ran my beer can cooler on the harp rack through a amp simulator plugin that is on my recording software. I am wondering how the harp attack would work going direct into a recording preamp and then to the interface? The problem with the plug in amp simulator is what I hear when I am playing is a muffled acoustic harp. I am also still trying to isolate the harp rack mic from the vocals. The vocals are super muddy/distorted on it and it can really mess up the vocal sound. I want to be able record amplified harp without buying another amp. Currently my 1 man band set up consists of - harps, 2 guitars, guitar stands, PA, mic stands, bass drum, snare drum, ride cymbal, drum pedals/hardware, keyboard, keyboard stand, guitar amp, and cds. I was thinking if I could run my harp/guitar through some kind of box direct to the recording gear (PA for gigs) I could lighten my load some. If so, I could probably get 2 of them. I am getting too old to be lugging all this gear around! Thanks. Walter

I put a shure 57 into an empty paper towel roll(lined it with an old winter hat I had laying around) and hooked this to my harp rack. I laid the mic parrallel to the harp with the capsule around the middle holes. I plugged both ends of the paper towel roll up with paper towels and ran this to preamp and then my recording interface. Again it was a pretty clean sound and somewhat compressed. On mixdown I used the guitar amp simulator on my recording software to get it broken up. The 57 did not pick up the vocals near as much as the tie clip mic. Walter

I am continuing to use a shure 57 stuck in an empty paper towel roll that is lined with cloth and attached to my harp rack. I stuff the ends of the roll with foam to get compression. I am running this direct to a recording preamp and then adding a plug in amplifier simulator on mixdown. Walter

I got the urge to go record around midnight. I had no idea it was some kind of super moon until my wife told me this morning. I don't follow those things but I did feel a deep connection with the universe when I recorded these songs. All words and music are spontaneously channeled through my one man band. Walter

I ran my $5 homemade tie clip mic into my empty paper roll that is attached to my harp rack into a fender princeton reverb. Recording everything at once makes for the acoustic harp to bleed into the vocal mic and the vocals to bleed heavily into the tie clip mic which is heavily distorted. Finding the balance is a challenge that maintains the vocals and amplified harp tones. All words and music spontaneously created and recorded. Walter

I have been experimenting with amplifying my harp rack via a bunch of different holders attached to my rack that would give a cupping effect. I am pretty much settled on a beer can cooler and an empty paper toilet roll. I put a $5 tie clip mic or a shure 57 in the cavities and run them to my princeton reverb. The main problem is the vocals bleeding into the harp mic which is heavily bassed and distorted. To bring up the level of the amplified harp to where I want makes the vocals distort. Also the acoustic sound of the compressed harp in the rack holder bleeds into the vocal mic. Yesterday I decided to turn the harp mic down to where I could barely hear it. What we have here is 98% acoustic harp sound from the paper towel roll and 2% of the amplified harp in the mix. Kind of a different sound. It definetely knocks some of the highs off the harp and adds to the mids. Recording with the same mic for the acoustic harp and vocals is a tough one to eq. The vocals like the highs and cut on the mids while the harp likes the highs cut way back and the mids boosted. To find a compromise for both is an ongoing tough eq puzzle. This session showed me other options - natural eq'ing. I like it! Walter

My wife and I went to the Lent fish fry at the local catholic church tonight. The cool part about it is there is never enough tables so you end up sitting wherever there is a seat. This reminds us of living in Europe. In the states tables are viewed as much more territorial to the first sitting there but the fish fry defies this rule. Tonight we ended up sitting with 4 elderly woman who ranged in age from 82-93. They still are independent and live together in a senior complex. We had a great conversation with them. The oldest was a real character. She has a $50 dollar bet going with two other seniors in their complex to who will die first. They have a routine everyday where they get together and check another day off on the calendar. I asked her what is the secret to living so long and she said to be awnry with a smile in your eye. These songs came out when we got home. Walter

A lot of spirits passed through me today as I played. This is the coolest part of spontaneously making up my words and music as I go along. I open my heart to the universe and some great spirits come by to tell and play their stories. There were a bunch today. I wonder why others aren't doing this approach? It is a real trip like no rehearsed one offers. Walter

I brought out one of my acoustic guitar and mic'd it along with my 1 man drums. Mic'ng the acoustic guitar in this set up is as hard as recording with the same mic for the vocals and harp. Seeing everything is a few inches from each other makes for a real recording challenge. There are all kinds of conflicting frequencies bleeding into all the mics. The guitar is a handmade take on a gibson L-00 that was made by a 3rd generation appalachian luthier out of 80+ year old woods. He sold it to me, brand new for $200. It has a sweet sound! All words and music spontaneously created and recorded. Walter
