Is it glass fibre and foam, with fabric stretched over? And what do they actually do? Like, what frequencies to they absorb/reflect?

And the ones on the ceiling, over the mix position? Are they the same?

You see if they're something I could DIY, I probably will need something similar around my mix position. In addition to whatever their function is, they look bloody fabulous!

(And yes, before anyone says it... Prior to getting a plan together, I am thinking back to front, as I anticipate needing something, but not sure what).

On the ceiling at Mix position (dark brown) are Owens Corning 705 or OC705 the others are OC703s. The rear wall and corners are 705s, all are 2" thick as per budget. I can add layers to any of those in the future as funds permit.

It looks to me like compressed fibres, rather than glass reinforced resin (which is what I make). I am wondering if there is a cheaper alternative material I can use?

yup- compressed fiberglass is the good stuff...

Rockwool is a viable and much less expensive, and much more readily availible (but slightly less performing) alternative. When going for compressed fiberglass, 3lb/cu.ft is good (hence the "3" in OC703). When going for rockwool, the 4.5lb/cu.ft stuff is most comparable. If your shopping, Roxul brand calls theirs RoxulSafe or "fire safing". Either way you go, you'll have to look up a commercial bldg. material supplier- you cant get this stuff at the Home Depot.

That's fair enough - and thanks for the info! A lot of stuff I use in my work is a cheaper alternative with no loss of quality, it's just that if I'm willing to buy over a certain amount, I can go through industry. Which is why, if I know what it is, by some other name, I can get hold of it for less.

A prime example is the silicone rubber I use for producing make-up FX prosthetics. Prosthetic silicone costs the earth. I can buy mould making rubber which is intended for the food trade and it isn't just similar - it's exactly the same product, just in a different packaging. It's only missing the softener-oil, which I just blend in when I mix it. Another is a specialist embalming wound-sealer product which, if you know what you're looking for, can be bought down the local builder's merchants (under floor treatments).

I might get lucky, I might not... But that's the basic principle of how I operate.

So if this stuff exists, anywhere outside the acoustic panel trade, chances are, I'll find it under another name. I just need to know what it's actually made of.

So - I'm assuming you can break this stuff, if you lean hard against it? Like a compressed fibreboard? I think what I make is entirely different. No rigid glass fibre laminates I've ever made are more than 3/4" thick.

One thing though...any particular reason for leaving the exposed concrete blocks along the walls?

Thanks, I plan to treat them, I simply haven't gotten that far yet ;)
The room was originally intended to be used as a rehearsal space, during construction it quickly turned into a hybrid. I wanted the room to be lively on the "Band side" and a bit more controlled on the "desk side" anyhow, Once musicians set up and I place gobos around I can get decent isolation.

Hey man, this thing looks great! Give me hope for my future (looking to buy a house in the next year!). I'm wondering if you can go into a little detail on the diffusers you made for the plug. What material did you fill it with and did you measure it all our or just randomly fill it?
