Well, I just got back from a trip from Portland to San Francisco over the weekend to puck up a deck that I bought.

It is a well maintained MCI JH-110A 1/4" halftrack. This unit can take 14" reels and plays at 7.5, 15 and 30 ips. Heads have low hours on a JRF relap and in general everything appears to work. Just a little dust.

It does have some red sockets. but they are looking OK. I'll get some time on the machine before I replace them.

This is my first MCI so I'm on the learning curve. I'm looking for a manual, notes, spare parts, 1/2" 2 track heads and rollers :) and all the other things that go with a deck. (operations and maintance manuals that is)

Oh yes, and some space to put it on the "studio".

It does have a noisy bearing on the pinch roller so Sweetbeats, where are you buying bearings?

Regards, Ethan

If I knew you were coming to the Bay Area, I'd have bought you a burrito :)

droooool!

nice deck!

Ethan, try VXB Bearing. That's where I got the bearings for my 440-8. The website is a little kludgey when trying to search for specifics but if you don't mind wading through all the 608Z bearings (for instance), its not bad. I spent a little more money for ABEC-7 bearings with ceramic balls, sealed and stainless races. Probably overkill but a pack of 10 was, like, $15.

Your MCI probably uses a fairly standard size...608, 622, etc.

Congrats, Ethan. That is a satisfying find. How much if I may be so bold?

You could just ship one to him, but avoid UPS and make SURE you wrap it in many layers of bubble-wrap and double-box if you can.

Ethan:

Nice machine. I'll be interested to hear how it goes. I'm still planning to take a trip early next year to pick up a JH-110 8 track and related stuff that a friend is going to donate. He has old stuff that needs to be copied off, so about all he will guarantee is all 8 channels working on playback, but probably there will be some work needed on a couple of record channels (and I may be better off just to snag a couple somewhere, cheap in the meantime).

Anyway, it sounds like I'll be learning some of the MCI world, too. I think at some point I may pick up an MCI 2 track, too.

Cheers,

Otto

Hi Otto,

I'll keep the list updated. There is a lot of info on MCI decks out there but it is skattered and takes a little work with google. You may know about this site:
http://mcirecording.com/forum/index.php

Which does not have a lot of traffic but is monitored by some real MCI gurus'

regards, Ethan

SCORE! Looks just like mine (no red sockets though). There is a guy in Nashville, Chris Mara, who is an MCI guru.
I'm sure he would know where to get parts. PM me and Ill shoot you his contact info.

Ethan, I was looking at your quiry over on the MCI forum about the SR3 bearings.

Wouldn't these work? Not sealed but they are shielded...

The MCI uses the bearings to set the height of the rollers. The bearing used is 0.1562" thick. The bearings you show are 36 thousands too thick. About 14% of a quarter inch tape width too high.

The R3 open bearings are the right size. I may get some 1/8" bearings and use a shim.

And the pinch roller is the one I need to replace and it is a "comon" size.

Oh...I saw in the post that you referenced the SR3ZZ so I thought you made a typo on the thickness...:o
