    which volume to increase

    When you guys are recording drum machines, keyboards, elec guitars, etc. into your recorder - how do you set the volume? For instance, with my drum machine, I'm not sure if I should crank the volume to the max and then adjust the input levels, or if I should have a medium volume from the drum...

    Vocal Recording Tricks?

    Hi all- I'm working on my vocals right now and would like your advice. When I listen to a lot of pro CDs, the voice sounds very full, like they recorded it two times - but it seems too perfectly matched to be two separate recordings. I've heard before that a trick is to record your vocals...

    What keyboard should I buy considering my purpose?

    Hi all, As of now, I know nothing about keyboards. Most of my time is spent recording songs on my multitrack. But now, I feel it is time to add some extra sound to my songs. I need a keyboard that has some good backing effects for songs (such as strings, etc.). I've used a keyboard once...

    Monitors - why do I need them?!

    Hi all, This may be a stupid question, but I don't know the answer right now - so please enlighten me! I do not understand why monitors are so important. The way I see it, if you mix using a decent pair of regular speakers and it sounds good through them - then that should be...

    drum maching --> multitrack

    Hi all, This is a pretty dumb question, but... I have a drum machine and it has two output jacks (left and right) and I am plugging it into my multitrack (tracks 1 and 2). How do I pan this? Do I set both tracks center or do I pan them hard left and the hard right? Thanks!

    problems recording vocals

    Hi all, I'm having some problems when recording my vocals on my multitrack. It seems as if they are sometimes too soft, and then other times too loud. Part of this is probably since I'm not a great singer, but maybe I also need to invest in a compressor? Will this help solve some of the...

    wind screen?

    I am just starting to use my new Rode NT3 mic (love the sound) and am wondering if I should use the wind screen that came with it. When I do the vocals I get some cracks with the t's and p's, but I'm not sure if the wind screen will take away from the crisp sound. Any thoughts on this? As...

    HELP! Problem with my NT3

    I just received a new Rode NT3 today and I cannot get it to work! I put the 9V battery in for power, and the light responded indicating that it has power. I have a regular mic cord with a 1/4" end that goes into my 4-track. But I'm not getting any response from the mic. I know that the...

    16 vs. 24 bit recording - what's the difference?

    Here's a question for those of you who have a digital multitrack (or know about them): I've been looking into getting one of these machines (maybe the Korg D12 or D16) and they say (for instance with the D12) "The D12 allows 12 track simultaneous playback for 16 bit or 6 track simultaneous...

    Q for those of you who use digital multitrack recorders

    Hi all, I am thinking about upgrading from my 4-track to a new digital multitrack (maybe the new Korg D12 when it comes out). I don't have any other equipment besides my instruments and a condensor mic. I was wondering if I will need to buy anything else besides the recorder to make it...
