I think this is probably one of the most pointless forum threads I've ever read. :D

bump

I want to know what transpired over at the ProRec!!!!

Well if Manning1 & BManning are one and the same,
then I would like to ....................................

..................extend my 'NET-HAND in gratitude to him as he gave me some of the best tips, advice, hints and help that I have EVER rec'd on the 'Net!!!! He was even the one who pulled my collar
and hipped me up to the fact that I should NEVER,EVER buy a Behringer Mixer (which I had ALREADY purchased a day b-4 he told me and BURNED out 2 weeks later)
BManning & Bill Park @ was 2 of the most helpful guys at ProRec
and would answer ANY question no matter how infantile it seemed!

Thankyou!

.......this guy even told me what NEGATIVE COMPRESSION RATIO means.....................

I have never even heard of that b-4!!!!! :)

it's like gidge said on another post, he knows a lot more than his mixes show. some people have a knack with or without knowledge and it would seem manning didn't have it. but it's a shame he took off.

Then those mixes are even more puzzling!

...........Cuzzin' Brucie, that's IF Manning1 and BManning are one and the same!!!
The BManning from ProRec KNEW HIS SHIT!!!!

[slight hijack]
MISTERQCUE- What happened to the mixer???
i was looking into a behringer mixer until i read the thread.

I bought a spanking BRAND NEW MX2624 and 2 weeks later, that sucker burned out!

Don't ever,ever,ever,ever,ever,ever.ever,ever.ever,ever,ever EVER,EVER,EVER buy a behringer mixer, nor deal with it's Customer Service-less Dept!!!!!

of course, to put the other side of the coin down, there are thousands of very happy behringer mixer users. i'm one, although i'm very aware of its limitations and i certainly wouldn't buy a large one with their reliability record.

mate, you need to look at the yamaha MG series ones. they're the same price as the behringers and of course yamaha quality. the features are quite similar to the behringer range becuase the japs looked at the germans and took careful aim and blew them out of the water.

sounds like a plot for a film.

Why would I a Yammy?

Home-boy, I own A Mackie 1202 VLZ, Alesis S-24 & 32 (pls don't ask why I got both of 'em; I'm just stoopid like that) and a Topaz 24/8! I'm a long standing member of Gear Addicts Anonymous and Gear Hoarders of America/NYC chapter (for peeps who have problems ridding themselves of unnecessary recording gear)!

My reasons for hatin' on Beh's mixers go way beyond my own personal experience that I had with them! I have listed NUMEROUS reasons why Beh mixers suck which have angered some and helped others. I'm no expert by any means on ALL things recording but I can honestly state that better quality can be had using another mixer in it's price range! U can belee' 'dat!!!

Peace

Manning's Mixes...

...maybe it's possible that Manning was simply going after something different with his sound?? Not everybody wants to sound like everybody else. In reading some of his posts, he states that he admires "older" production techniques/sounds, even mentioning "Secret Agent Man" as a favorite song. If you listen to some of his tunes with that in mind, you might find that he achieved alot of his personal goals with his sound.

I am not a professional sound engineer and I'm certainly not an expert at mixing, but it seems to me like too many people are concerned with sounding like the "industry standard" at the expense of developing their own sound and style. There's a tendency these days to listen too closely to the sound "quality" and not to the music itself.

Personally, I gained a lot from Manning's posts and I'm sorry he won't be around here to share info and answer questions.
Seems like he had a lot to offer, but it just wasn't appreciated.
Or, maybe it was just misunderstood?

Just my thoughts on it...for what they are worth.

Production values are not necessarily synonymous with mix quality.

There is a calibre of audio quality (mix balance, tonal esthetics, etc...) that is distinct from the production itself. As a matter of fact, a well-done mix is transparent and let's the production shine thru.

This is why it's very easy to distinguish between a garageband demo and a professionally-engineered mix. While the production value may be the same in both cases (ie - the producer was going for a lo-fi sound, for exmaple), there will be a polish and a blanced tonal character to the pro-mix that would not be there in the novice's version.

I'm generalizing here and not necessarily saying this is true of Manning1... but the point is, a good mix has a definite audio esthetic that a poor one doesn't, and most people, although they may not know the technical reasons why, can easily distinguish the two.

You obviously haven't listened to his songs.

Although i didnt want to post here anymore. I feel i am
forced to go on record over a number of points. The reason i dont want to post anymore is SIMPLE. Ive had enough heartache in the past few years from losing family members,
and i dont need anymore hurt as i'm still grieving over these losses.
Thus i dont need visceral comments ive received which i find
highly upsetting.
anyway , heres some points in clarification.
1. NONE of my articles/tips were lifted from books.
All my suggestions/tips were based on my own experiemces
recording lots of folks over many many years.
I have tried over many years to help folks as best i can.
I WAS on prorec and i tried to help folks there as well starting out
as misterq can attest.
2. Kester was correct. i dont like to do what others are doing.
If some people dont like some of my mixes. so be it.
I normally check my mixes with "the normal consumer" in mind.
and ive found from past experience the type of mix some mix engineers like is sometimes not what the normal consumer likes.
Its interesting to note that with all the fantastic mixes around ,
the industry is disappointed with sales.
Kester is once again right.
I try and get an "older sound". sometimes i fail miserably,
and sometimes it works. Its interesting to note that the "older consumer" seems to like my mixes better than the very younger ones according to my tests.
sometimes i just dont have all the time to devote due to worrying about my family and having to put my family first
far ahead of my recording activities over the past few years. also as i mentioned, i dont have the luxury of some equipment i used to own, and have had to sell off a nice studio to help family as they aged.
so now i have a very minimal set up, which i'm hoping i can rebuild by the end of this year now some severe family issues are abating.
when some younger members of this bbs experience this as they get older they will probably only then understand particularly the financially draining aspects when one has to help family, and the impact on their own studio.
I think someone once said "walk a mile in my shoes....."

I hope this clarifies a number of points.
There is an old saying where i come from "try to do good,
and be kind to others". This is all i was trying to do.
I dont want to post because i need fun and joy in my life,
not hurtfull comments. Maybe i'm a romantic,
but how i wish people could just be nice to each other .
If you ever listen to my song
"The Whole of London town is Crying" which many folks have told me they like ,(but maybe its not to the taste of many folks on here),
it will help understand me a little more.
over and out.
bmanning

guess he didn't like my: "how to make a thread more readable" suggestions.

My next article will be called: "Manning - the life and death of a paragraph"
