Hello and welcome to my thread in which I ask you for help PLEASEEEE!

I run a project studio for rap music in central London, we recently got an Mbox for one of our vocal booth PCs and a Shure SM7 mic; as our Rode NT2 was making the rap vocals sound a lil...... excited/tinny..... :(

Anyway, with the SM7 being dynamic, and the Mbox gain only running to about 40, we are havin a couple of issues with the SM7 flexing its true muscle.....

My question is: HOW can I get this SM7 sounding how it should... into PTools7 and an Mbox? We have a couple of cheap MicPre's like TFPro and Meek; but I find they add a little colour, and I want the cleanest cleanest cleanest I can get - for the SM7 to run true right into PTools.

Now money is an issue - so any suggestions at getting this setup fired up? Any suggestions for a well matched SM7 - mic Pre? Money wise - Im talking 200 to 450 of your US dollars..

Edit: Any and all suggestions welcome, + if anyone else uses an SM7 / Mbox in any way, then let me know your setup and how you find it... mucho appreciato

I don't own an SM7, but I do have an EV RE20. Both require substantial gain. For low gain sources, I find myself going to either the M-Audio DMP3 (66dB gain) or the Studio Projects VTB1 (72dB gain). Neither is a spectacular pre, but both are fairly clean, quiet, and inexpensive.

Holy cow! That must be the fastest response I ever had on any forum! :) - AHH yea the RE20; I heard great great things about that.. so you say DMP3.. you find that good;, thats around the sub 200 mark right? What kind of music do you do as matter of interest? Whats your exact chain? ~Thanks again bro

Why not at least try daisy chaining the two channels of the MBox?
Ya know, into channel one, out and back into channel two?

I believe that would equal similar results to using an extrenal preamp first (a little better or a little worse....maybe equal) and it won't cost a cent.

thats a good idea... let us know how this turns out if you give it a shot dude!

Damn I never thought of that! I will give that a crack when Im back in studio hopefully sometime next week and Ill let you guys know about that. It seems such an obvious idea that surely its been tried before! We will see..

thanks again

Nope that doesnt work soon as signal is in - its hit with the A/D so no real way of doing that.
