Over here I use the Stagetec Nexus system as the "hub" for the studio. I've been told this is the first "hybrid" Stagetec system, as I used Protools HD as the interface and editor, but all routing, summing, A/D and D/A conversions take place within the Stagetec system.
The Stagetec system I use her also includes their preamps, which are remote controlled by the software interface and have many features, from various shelves to a superb high quality limiter per channel, as well as phase reversal, grouping of sets of pre's etc. etc. What is pretty unbelieveable is that the combination of the preamp with the converter scores a dynamic range (SNR-A) of over 150dB (compare to for instance the DAC or Lucid's, rated at 114/116, and that is the converters only).
As the main downfalls of ProTools (or sub that for any DAW) is summing - everyone tries to push all channels through one chip, which does simply NOT work - this system avoids all of the pitfalls, but retains all the advantages of a DAW. In other words, where as many "acts with a budget" record on protools, they, if they have a large enough budget, will go to a studio with a largeframe analogue console to route all channels through that for their final mix. What they hear "sounds better" is simply the fact that the analogue console like a Neve, SSL etc., does a better job of summing. In this system the summing is done within the Stagetec system, which used 5 high power chips for each group of 32 channels, thereby maintaining audio quality throughout. The result is a sound quality that surpasses anything possible in analogue, it simply sounds amazing.
As a bit of "proof in the pudding", Sony is just launching their high definition film cameras with a 15 minute film shot by one of the world's top cameraman. This had to be accompanied by a high definition sound-track, for which we did the recording, mixing, mastering and post production here, despite the fact that Sony do have some mean studios and mastering facilities themselves.
(pretty cool advert for the studio
Anyway, check out the specs for the Nexus components, they are pretty amazing.
