let's see.....I think the Russians?? Unless you count communism as slavery. The japanese? And actually I think the Chinese have never been enslaved ever, unless by the japs. And the Scandanavians? Anybody here know?

plus Jimi was probably a great grandson of a slave, living in the country that enslaved them. The cultural differences are huge, not to mention how much less money they've all got considering the head start all of the whites descendants have had in this country and economy.

Listen to James Brown, then listen to the Beatles. Rythm is pure soul, Melody is pure smarts (not that rythm isnt smart). How many black kids you know can afford a garage for a garage band. lol. That's why they make rap. Even if you could sell enough drugs to afford drums, and STILL buy more drugs to sell, where the hell you gunna play them in the projects??! And then good luck finding another ganster guitarist and gangsta bassist. Lol. Rap is A OK in my book, unless its that new stuff. Rappers with money aren't rappers, they pop stars and sloganites. Punk is dead too. I think Psych Folk and Rap are the only real popularized forms of "peoples music" that still excite young kids today, tho. Unless something else new, exciting, dramatic, dangerous, expansive, and sexy comes around. Hopefully it'll be able to revolve around a guitar. But I can't really cling to melody. It's not fun, or even that hard to do. Rythm is where it's at. James Brown and soul/funk. Fugazi, Nation Of Uylesses and the Post Hardcore Punk movement. The early stages of Rap (not hip hop), And even Igor Stravinsky. He alone is proof, that rythm is greater than melody. People always hate what's new. They tried to kill him and the orchestra on opening night!!!!

When it comes to music, I'm full on socialist. In Canada small music venues and indipendant bands and labels are subsidized by the government!! What a way to keep the kids occupied and off the streets! What a way to enrich the culture!

(I was still joking about the rap mics under 100 tho)

Cool post. Kind of eclectic in where your coming from, but interesting nonetheless. As for Rhythm (sp.) and melody though, to me they are completely complementary. A harmonious blending of the two is what music is all about - separate one from the other and you are left with the equivalent of an all male/all female kind of aural reality. Sterile and unproductive.

Ah yes, you're right, but I was mainly reffering to extremes. Like James Brown type funk and post-punk. Minimal melody, in fact it's largely avoided.

For those of you chiming in to this interesting discussion, I would like to point out that from this perspective (ie: in a historical sense) its easy to judge without having been there. As someone who grew up when these guitars were beginning to rule the world and the veil over music as an artform had been lifted, it was , without a doubt, the most exciting time musically that I have seen. I couldnt wait to hear what all of the greats of the moment were going to come up with next.

After Sgt. Peppers opened the door for improvisation in June 67, you had Are You Experienced (Aug 67), Ten Years After (Oct 67)and Disraeli Gears (Dec 67).Right behind that Jimi with Axis (Jan 68),Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green in Feb 68 and another of the most influential guitar records ever made, Truth, in Aug 68. Then came Zep. Two records in ten months which sounded like the same record from beginning to end....they had that much material.....AND they recorded both while touring and never really spent that much time in the studio working it through. Its interesting that they hired Eddie Kramer for ZepII after hearing the Hendrix records.

Very exciting. I wish I still had all those first release copies I bought when it was brand new music.

As for who's better?

Who do you like?

Right handed, left handed

Jimmy plays his Les Paul slung low, looking very cool but not getting the greatest technical advantage over the instrument, good for becoming a rock icon as long as you stick to your style. Jimi played his right handed strat left handed without changing the string order. How the hell do you do that? Jimi drew from a broader palette of influences using a relaxed, almost lazy country, bluesy, sometimes jazzy style as he rocked.

i think page was the better musician and hendrix the better guitar player.
page played more different styles, like heavy, folky, poppy, bluesy and hendrix music wasn't that diverse but still wonderful and colourful, inspiring

Rap??? I thought this was a music forum???

No, it's a recording forum. Says so right at the top there. Specifically, this is the guitar/bass section. No mention of music. So, people are as welcome to discuss Hendrix and Page as they are Gavin Rossdale.

i think you should take a closer look at some of the many many pictures involving Jimi and his right-handed guitar. It was without a doubt strung lefthanded. The pickups however were still in their Fender righthanded order. Did it make a difference? Think of the harmonics associated with your low E string being the LONGEST string on the guitar....Do some research on the net for mid to late 60's Strats and the pole pieces on both righthanded and lefthanded guitars....Did it make a difference? Yes.

BTW. According to Eddie Kramer, Jimi could pick up Noel Reddings Jazz bass and play it fluently upside down without the strings being reversed to lefthanded. He did this frequently when Noel would leave the sessions in a huff.

I stand corrected

After video review the judges say he did restring his strat left handed (star spangled banner on AOL.com.) However Jimi performs some tongue antics on Purple haze that would inspire Michael Jordan (but not Gene Simmons) and he also plays with his teeth which I never saw Jimmy do.

I grew up poor, which is the only reason I played a righty guitar strung left handed. My dad wouldn't buy me a bass, so I would play his right stringed bass upside down. I kept this up throughout my life being in bands & I am pretty good at it.

Bottom line - Who cares?

there is this guy down my local who plays with his teeth.....:)

Tony Melendez played guitar with his feet for the Pope back in '87.

His Doritos shaped toe nails gives the guitar a twangy sound.

Having read through all of this again (including my own reply), I figured I'd add that I could decide which one's best via a coin toss. Heads = Jimi Hendrix; Tails = Jimmy Page. Would be interesting to see how often one beat out the other, based on how the coin lands. Otherwise, my vote is still Both.

Page...pretty simple here...one sold more records than any other artist...and the other was decent but a bit of an effects guy.

WOW! It all depends on what I'm in the mood to listen to. All in all Hendrix wins.

Really? Basing it on record sales? Then Shania Tawain beats both of them. And McDonald's makes the best burger ever tasted. The best beer, Bud.

A little story for you Hendrix fans:

Ernie Isley conducted a little guitar clinic at the Fender Museum (Corona, CA) a few years back, and told some interesting tales.

He was the young one, so he stayed home when the big boys went out. A little-known (at the time) young man came to live with them for a while, and when his brothers went out, their guest would stay at the house and play his guitar for hours. He was ALWAYS playing his guitar. Yes, it was Jimi Hendrix.

What a great anecdote for practicing contributes to greatness, don't ya think?
