Fair call there. Pig Destroyer are one of my favourite bands, I was just trying to name some more 'progressive' bands. Haha, dont stress about 'cliches' or what other people think of the bands you like mate. Scott Hull and J. R. Hayes are both awesome at what they do. You cant beat Prowler in the Yard. Terrifyer lost a little of that tempo and aggressive edge, a little too polish. Still a killer album though.

There are tons of older grind groups that kick arse - Napalm, Carass, Assuck, Exit 13 and all of that. I've really just been looking for more modern style grind recently. If you havent heard Genghis Tron go check them out.

I agree ...

I blame MTV for playing MUSIC only 42.87 minutes of each 24 hour period.
YEAH !!!! THATS IT !!!! whao , wait ... no , I thought mtv was just playing a video , but it was a friggin' commercial for "metal" balads ... I dislike mtv emensely ...

Oh and by the way said:
...well, yeah, all true, I still hold my ground in saying that bands with range and songwriting will rescue and entire genre of bands with one vocal sound, one tempo, one guitar rythmn, one solo, and one double bass drum.

Kip Winger...Boy George, Michael Jackson, Prince and last but not least, rap.

I wanted to vote Def Leppard, but Bon Jovi is my choice from the list.

See, that doesn't matter. Just because Dave Grohl says something about Nirvana, or Hetfield says something about Metallica's influences DOESN'T MAKE IT TRUE!!!

Look, the Black album came out the same year as Nevermind. It sold 14 million copies, way more than any '80s Metallica record. And when you look at sales figures for those albums now, it includes all the sales to fans they gained after the Black album.

Now it's true that most of the great old metal bands no longer had big album sales after 1991. But you know what? That is because they were pretty much done. Ozzy was done after Bark at the Moon (some would say before). Maiden, Seventh Son. Priest, Turbo (or Painkiller, but that's still 1990, and it didn't sell as much). Nirvana didn't kill those bands, they just got old.

The newer metal bands that came along didn't want to play the old style, it was a race to be a) heaviest and b) fastest. Not as popular with the older fans, and it didn't get as many new fans. Again, not Nirvana's fault.

That sounds nice, but in most markets you could NEVER hear metal on the radio. Ozzy got a bit of airplay, Sabbath less so, Priest and Maiden, maybe the night before they came into town. When MTV came out with Headbanger's Ball, that was pretty much the most exposure metal ever got. And you know what was the highlight of every Headbanger's Ball? Metallica's "One". So was it Metallica's fault for making metal popular? Because the situation on radio now for "real" metal is no different than 1983.

So again, how does that mean Nirvana killed metal? If anything, Nirvana primed former top 40 fans to listen to heavier music.

Nirvana had solos, so did Pearl Jam. STP, not so much, but Velvet Underground does . . . 'cause Slash kicks ass

IT WASN'T LIKE THAT! Damn, I wish you were in my HS, with all the chicks dressing like Cyndi Lauper and listening to Simply Red and Mr. Mister :p If you listened to metal, you were probably a future dropout who skipped class to smoke dope behind the shop room. And no girls would give you the time of day, unless you played a Dokken song for them. Not that I know anything about that :o
ozzy has no will to make new records because RANDY RHOADS IS DEAD AND ZAKK WYLDE JUST TOOK HIS PLACE!!!! priest became a top selling act last year and sold a shit load of cd's,metal owns a lot of other types of music.
its kinda wierd ya know....ozzfest is probably the biggest concert of today and hmmm.....who headlines last year....was it....oh man it was iron maiden! also after ozzy released no more tears he was probably bigger than ever. maybe it wasnt as old school metal as ozzy used to be but it was in fact metal.nirvana had kirk getting high on coke and attempting to write leads not solo's.anyone whos ever heard a solo knows those werent SOLOS. that was a suicidal musician who got lucky writing some shit that "changed the world" sure it was great music and I liked it a lot.....but it wasnt even close to ground breaking. metallica didnt get airplay cause america was hooked on yes the destroyers of metal, motley crue, poison, bon jovi, ect...but if ur gona sit here and say metallica made metal mainstream and killed it....ur a retard.....im not saying its dead today cause its very much alive and is about to come back BIG TIME...metallica opened the worlds eyes to bands like slayer, and anthrax they didnt get much if any air play till they toured with tallica.metallica just got lucky and was doing the right thing at the right time and the entire world loved it, u cant argue with record sales, they are the biggest band on earth black album alone sells 5 million copies a year....thats enough to put all 4 of ur kids through college, metallica didnt kill metal they gave it birth...maybe not the music but we wouldnt have bands like killswitch engage, lamb of god, shadows fall, devil driver, sevendust, if tallica wasnt around. KINDA OFF TOPIC BUT JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW- Andrew(friend of mine) Check out his band www.myspace.com/buryingthetrend

WHO is Kirk from Nirvana?
Ah, I don't think coke was his problem.
Whilst this thread has more than its fair portion of histrionics it severely lacks any sense/knowledge/sequence of history.

Yeah... metalheads always infight - its nothing new. I mean youve got metalcore, numetal, black metal, doom metal, stoner metal, grindcore, death metal, hair metal, thrash metal, folk metal, viking metal, gore metal and so on.

That Myhatbroke guy is a clown. Did he just say dont blame the mainstream, just before pointing the blame at mainstream hair metal?

And mate, hate to tell you, there are many more strains of metal originating from different points all over the world. Metallica didnt create the world of metal - thats stupid talk. Example: Napalm Death - started 1982, released 'ground breaking' album in 1987. Example: Carcass - started 1985, released 'ground breaking' album in 1988. And I'm not asking whether you like those bands or if they have any 'worth'. Point is, they began grindcore, which is more of a combination of punk, hardcore and death than Craptallica.

And for the record Ozzfest blows. The b-stage usually destroys the a-stage. Give me Hellfest or Contaminated any day of the week.

There are so many irrelevant comments in this thread it hurts my head. Metal exists outside of Metallica, Slayer and Motley Crue - that was years ago guys. Metal exists beyond Killswitch Engage and Lamb of God too (not that LOG are anywhere near as bad as KSE). Real metal is of course, alive and well. It doesnt need media coverage. The fact that extreme music is flourishing in almost every single country says a wealth about it. Europe, to Asia, to the Americans, to Australia - every inch of the globe. Music exists outside of what American media tells you exists.

Well, It is true that when Nirvana came on the scene the radio world quit playing metal, the record companies quit sighning metal bands and the general public thought that actually knowing how to play your guitar with talent and dedication wasn't cool. Metal didn't die it just went underground and morphed into a new form of music.

Metal died because chicks don't dig it anymore. it is exclusively for little internet weasels, comic book collectors and role playing dorks. It's a joke.

Back in the late 80s there were lots of chicks that loved the metal. The record companies thought that was the key, so they shovelled poison and some of those other putrid LA bands on the public. But those bands sucked so hard, that they made females collectively turn their back on the genre. No chicks, then you lose the majority of the dudes. then you don't get to play stadiums anymore and play bars in rhode island that burn to the ground killing a significant percentage of the world wide metal audience.

Don't discount the fact that Bon Jovi and Winger and Poison's gayness points count against the Metal genre. That is what most people think metal is. I know it's not, but my dollar doesn't drive the economic policies of record companies. I know that you guys love the real deal death metal and you think it is really manly. But it isn't. It's even gayer than poison because no death metal guys get any pussy.

Also, with the rise of hip-hop, alot of meatheads that used to listen to metal to feel tough found another genre to beat their chests to. AND the girlies love it.

Metal fans: take a look at yourselves. You guys are dorks. Aren't you embarassed for making it so obvious? You should play music that chicks dig. If the chicks dig it, there will be lots of chicks at your gigs. If there are lots of chicks at the gigs, then there will be lots of dudes at the gigs. If there are lots of chicks and dudes at the gigs, there are lots of people at the gigs and the club owner will be happy and you might even get laid. Chicks drive the music market. that's why someone as gay as john mayer is successful.

And the guys wearing Girl Pants and twirling guitars like hula hoops in your signature aren't a joke?

Hopefully your comments are meant to be funny. Otherwise your a mis-informed douche bag.

HAHAHAHAHA who voted for stryper??

Obviously somebody who is deaf.

Michael Sweet has one of the most amazing voices in Hard Rock/Metal, and the entire band was made up of really good musicians.

Huhuhh. Girl pants.

I am always trying to be funny, but there is a grain of truth in what I said. A grain as big as a volleyball.

There is this logic that guys who play really fast and have all those licks that they can throw out there can do it because they sit at home and noodle on the guitar all week instead of chasing girls. Pretty much any cool guitar player in existance is a pussy hound. The real deal heavy metal guys act like they do it "for the love of metal". Anyone will tell you, and someday you'll find out (we'll keep our fingers crossed for you), pussy is way better than metal.

Maybe you're right. I am just thinking of everyone I know that plays for the love of metal and they like to play dungeons and dragons and first person shooter games and don't get any pussy.

But, I am a douchebag and I am married, so I never get any pussy either. For a while I did, but then we got married.

By the way, I saw that gif on wikipedia and thought it was the craziest thing in the world so I stole it. I don't know who the guy is but that is one crazy freaking chow ain't it. Look at the bass player jumping off that amp and the bouncers at the stage and the nut that runs across and stage dives. That 2 seconds is the fucking craziest show I ever saw. If that LP would have gone non-hula hoop and bashed him in the head, it would have knocked his dick in the dirt for real, no?

I'm not sure whether to keeping ROFL or flip two birds at you for this assessment...

maybe I'm just excited that i said ass in a word :)

You are true about this... very true :)

It seems pretty dumb to me, the notion that one kind of music (ie grunge) coming along could kill another (ie metal)...People who stop listening to one type of music because another comes along are basically just following trends, and to be honest their musical opinion is of no importance.

The idea that guys who do stuff to get pussy get pussy, and those who dont, dont. But then thats completely obvious. That has nothing to do with metal, thats just a fact, those who go out looking for it are more likely to get it than those who dont...

You forgot to include:

Pretending to lick your guitar like it was big ding dong

Ugly dudes trying to look like chicks (stilletto heels? gimme a break)

Chicks only dug the cheesy ballads (that's probably number 1.)

Metal became mainstream. Everybody started sounding alike, looking alike, acting alike (for example Licking your guitar like it's a big ding dong).

eh...out of that list, i'd have to say korn killed metal

not that they really "killed" anything, but they watered down the underground shit, then marketed it like it WAS underground shit, then had a million of crap-ass bands rip off their psuedo-metal style

as much as i hate the whole emo thing, it is better then nu-met...wait no it's not
