And oh, you like country? Cmon man, all credibility gone there.

Wait a second. I never said that. I really hate country. At least modern country. But I do like old country where actual guys sang songs about pain and struggle and real human emotions. Plus their geetars really twanged, ya know?

Damn, you really are a clueless farken clown, arent yah mate? See, Zed10R definately knows what going on. There is a little thing called self-expression that I would not silence for anything in the world - all the pussy, all the money, fvck it. If it costs my personality, my soul, who I am and what I believe then it simply isnt worth it. We're after expression. We're after artistic satisfaction. We're after self actualisation. It's a little something called art, which has died long, long ago in Western culture. I know, you're going to sit there and protest 'metal isnt art!' - wrong; that metal youre referring to isnt art. There are those bands out there, and no they dont pose, they dont wear makeup, and they dont play over the top wanker solos. They express themselves devoid of egos. They pour their souls out. You mightnt really understand what its like to have a passion that drives your life. I mean, you do live in America, where every single act is about how others perceive you, how good you look in front of the cameras and all that other sad, sad b/s. I have to say, it takes a real man to live in that society and realise whats really going on. I'm glad I have met and spoken with so many Americans that dont act like the sad materialist, self concious, deluded, self obsessed wankers most seppos are. Maybe you fall into the former category? The point is, if you dont feel it or understand it you never will. And mate, from the way you're talking, from the way your priorities are lining up - I dont think youve got a hope in hell.

Wow. You sound like someone who fantasizes an awful lot. I like real-world music. Not imaginary warriors and goblins and firey pits. The fact that you see a fantasy life as superior to true grit demonstrates everything that I do see lacking in metal. I see metal guys with their leather wristbands fastened around their girlie little pale arms strutting around like they are wrestlers. That is the joke, mate. Artistic expression is all well and good, but it ain't shit when it comes from someone devoid of true life experience and true life motives. You see the music as the end all be all, but I see it as a vehicle for expressing the story I want to tell. If you guys would put away your 32-sided dice long enough to walk amongst the common man, you'd see that art for art's sake is crap.

... I dont think grindcore falls under the blanket term show business?

See this is what I mean - the metal I listen to isnt about Viking warriors raping men and going into war; it isnt about people big noting themselves; its not about idiots talking about blood and gore and so on.

The point I have tried to make every goddamn step of the way in this silly little thread is, grindcore is about expressing yourself - which means HOW YOU FEEL, WHAT YOU BELIEVE, HOW YOU SEE THINGS - not about 'fantasy' or whatever tripe you're trying to pin on me. The little armband thing couldnt be more true. Those people are idiots, as are those black metal idiots who think they rape christians or whatever they want to believe --- as are morons who think the three numetal kids they see in the street or the 80s throwback hairmetal nerd jerks somehow represent all metalheads!

You have to try and get this through your head - whatever preconceptions you have about a metal subculture doesnt apply to all forms of metal music. There is a massive difference in the style, lyrical content/concepts and so forth between thrash, death, black, doom, grind and so on.

Of course you cant write meaningful music without 'life experience' - but then again, you cant see past your own cock because you like to believe all metalheads are fantasy dungeon and dragons spindely little nyerds. That doesnt apply in all subgenres! That doesnt apply in bloody Australia on the other side of the world (or in the cultural groups in Sweden, Europe and Canada where the music is big)! Stop with your silly little stereotyping!

The fact that you see a fantasy life as superior to true grit demonstrates everything that I do see lacking in metal.

What grindcore is, is the fusion of extreme musical elements of metal with the integrity, the culture, the passion, the socio-cultural and political content of hardcore punk rock. It does away with big noting, with meaningless crap. It is about L-I-F-E, about the fvcking world man, not about any of this stupid crap you're on about. We express ourselves through an extreme medium, got that? I have said it around 37 bloody times now. Try to understand.

And make up your mind here you clown - do you want 'real world' music, or do you want 'self expression' or do you want to tell a little story... It doesnt seem like you have the slightest clue yourself.

Look the way I see it you're mistaking the metal I listen to to the majority of crap out there. I agree with what you say - that all this tryhard fantasy b/s, self proclaiming, egoistical, indulgent crap isnt worth a thing - that relevant, and 'real' music with ideals and direction is worth far more.

But just realise when youre saying these things, you cant say it about metal as a whole. The thing I love about the genre is it keeps evolving - and a few subgenres of metal have evolved past the pathetic shortcomings, trappings and cliches of the majority that you seem so hung up on.

Grindcore? Is that the coffee of the day at starbucks?

I think it's important to challenge ideas about music. It helps you to cement your own convictions to your mascara and miss clarol hair dye. If you love your music, then it isn't like I am going to say something to make you think it's gay, just as you aren't gonna say anything to make me think it isn't gay.

The thread is "Who destroyed metal". My position was that when the women quit liking it, it dropped off the map. You have to see it for what it once was. Metal used to be HUGE. Now, it is sorta medium-small. You don't hear metal coming from camaros anymore, you hear eminem coming from Mitsubishis.

Its the question that is the problem. If you even attempt to answer it, your stupid. I do see it for what it once was... you don't. Metal was, is and always will be underground. Anything mainstream is just pop-metal, recycled bullshit that actually hurts my brain to listen to. I don't hear anything from any other car on the street because I'm too busy listening to my music. I don't give a fuck what other people listen to. I have my taste, you have yours. I don't listen to radio, ever. You only see whats on the surface of metal, and thats fine. Just make sure you know that too.

what???

I havent read much of this thread, but nirvana didnt destroy metal. I dont think any band destroyed metal. Culture may have destroyed it, but not Nirvana

Stevie Ray Vaughn killed metal. When people saw that a white southern countryboy, playing blues, was hotter on the guitar than the army of metal guitar shreadders......... it was all over for metal.

Nirvana actually salvaged metal by taking the guitar solos out.

It's so embarassing to be a metal player now....they wear clown make-up and masks. :D

I've heard people say that a lot about Nirvana. I really don't understand where they are coming from. In fact it kind of winds me up. I love metal and I love Nirvana and I really don't see the connection. If they mean that Nirvana showed a few people that you didn't have to dress up in spandex and play a million notes a minute to play heavy rock music then well, it only means that. But then some of us knew that anyway.

If someone could give me a detailed explaination to the reasoning behind this theory I would be very interested. Like I say I have heard people say it for years but have never understood it.

Metal isn't dead!

Of course metal isn't dead at all, just not as mainstreem anymore. I checked Nirvana only because the "bongheads and psuedo intellectuals" thought that music was becoming shallow (it was to a point) and Nirvana convinced them they were getting something deep and meaningful. Of course they were getting stripped down guitars with no tone, and uninspired songs that just made everyone feel bad about themselves, and squashed the good feelings were were all having just before this crap was released to the public.

Metal is not dead, just not popular, I know hundreds of teens in our local area that are becoming familiar with AC/DC, Slayer, Judas Priest, and the like, and these teens are becoming more educated about what "real" metal is and liking it more and more.

Metal is not dead.....

Fuck Nirvana, they sucked anyways.....

I had to vote Korn out of the choices posted. There was modern metal...Pantera, White Zombie, Helmet, Prong, etc. Then Korn reared it into numetal jock shit and it slowly swallowed itself. Ruined it for everyone. Thanks.

Metal used to be HUGE. Now, it is sorta medium-small.

it's funny you say that, because i just spent my night in an arena with almost 30,000 people who were there to see mastodon, lamb of god, and slayer

I saw an interview with the singer from Warrant. He said he was in the office of the ceo for their label, the guy had a big Warrant poster on the wall behind his desk. He went back the next week and the poster was changed to an Alice in Chains Dirt poster. He said his career was over in that moment.

who destroyed metal?

my vote goes to people who make threads like these and bring their unjustified wankery to the playing field... ;)

yea, well, if warrant was anywhere near as good as AIC, he might've had a chance

there's just no comparing cherry pie or what-the-fuck-ever with the stuff on dirt, or pretty much any other AIC album
