Which monitors?!

Hey,

Im workin on a project studio where I will mostly be using it to only record with. I will be bringing the tracks to an engineer to have the tracks mixed/mastered. So I'm looking for monitors that are flat in response and will be be good for hearing the raw tracks and also be fairly even with bass/mid/treb. I am not looking for the most nit picky best of the best stuff though since I will be bringing the tracks else where.

I will mostly be doing pop/rock music, mostly stuff like Blink 182/Katy Perry/etc.

I have been looking at the KRK RP 5's/6's/8's, some people say the 5's are good but are weak on bass where as the other 2 get gradually better, but do you think it would be that big of a deal for what I need? Would the 5 or 6 suffice for my needs?

I've also been looking at the Yamaha HSM50 or the M Audio BX5A

I don't really wanna go over $400 but I will maybe go to $500 if I need to.

Any input will be appreciated!
 
Yep, I use the KRKs 6's. Yes, I chose the 6's over the 5's because the 5's definitely lacked something. But also I didn't feel as though the 8's were any more benefit (to me).

Avoiding recommending them *just* 'cause I own some, I haven't had any problem with them and I think they'll do a great job for the money.

.. but the response will only be as flat as your room response :~)

Steer very clear of the BX5a's. They are junk. The KRK's are a nice set of monitors too. I listened to just about every monitor available for under 500.00 when I was looking for a set myself. I ended up buying a set of Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2a's and absolutely love them. For the 300.00/pair price tag, the sound will blow you away.
 
I auditioned several monitors with familiar recordings before settling on Yamahas with the 8" woofer. More $ than you want to spend, but well worth the difference IMHO. Very flat and nice bass response, and the mixes translate well to other systems.
 
I went through the same process you are doing when I wanted to buy my first monitors. I bought the BX5a's and.....well that a story for another day. I ended up buying a pair of Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2a for the same price. IMO they sound better than the M-Audio's and KRK's.
 
i picked up KRK5's on sunday as a fathers day treat to myself. prior to that i was using computer speakers to mix so anything above that would've been great. $300 was right about at my budget and i needed to buy them at Best Buy since i have their credit card. since this is for home recording (can't play loud monitors whenever i want since i have a wife and kids) i didn't need these huge monitors on my desk. quite frankly i wish the 5's were a bit smaller, they're pretty big. i don't even wanna imagine how big RP8's would be. i'm happy with these monitors. i'm not a professional mixologist so i don't need top of the line stuff. quite frankly i'm trying to get out of the cycle of "if i could just have this next better model my songs will be that much better". get equipment, learn how to use it and write better songs.
 
I have used 5" speakers for years. After a while, and listening to a bunch of mixes on various systems, you start to learn how things are going to translate. The main problem is the bass response. If you make the the bass sound good through the 5" speakers it'll probably be way too bassy on most systems.

Of course I've used some crappy sp-5's (the precursor to the bx-5).
