Is the term “ modal interchange/ mixture “ meaningful ? Does that simply mean that you can play any chord anywhere?? D is ii- Ionian, II- Lydian, bII- Phrygian etc.... what’s the point?? Thnx cheers

Never heard of the term "modal interchange", but mixing modes could create interesting sounds depending on the style you're playing. For example, bVI bVII I is a really common progression that mixes the ionian and aeolian modes.

I get the idea that ii is ionian and II is lydian but personally I never really thought of it that way. I always think of II as just being an alternate version of ii. Sometimes I feel people get hung up on modes when they're not relevant to most styles of music. Even when modal mixing is used it's usually just dropped in for flavor and it's not really a core component.

Modal Interchange sounds like a Swedish late 60s early progressive rock with folky pretensions outfit !

Or the first album of a Swedish late 60s early progressive rock band with folky pretensions.
