Do me a favor? Out of your 3,000 songs that you've recorded, pick 3 that you're most proud of and let us know what they are?

Moonshine and Reefer sounds good. I like that you talked about cocaine. I love the cola.

thanks for listening! I have approx 3,000 songs on the net. On disc, reel to reel, cassettte, adat, dat, video, there are more like 100,000. Pick 3? I like all of them because they represent those given moments in my life. Also the ones I like the most are usually the least played on the soundclick stats page. People tend to like the fast ones and ones with titles that involve drugs, violence. Walter

Pick 3.

let's pretend you just died, and your family/friends are picking 3 songs to play at your funeral...what would you like to see make the cut?

Any 3 they wanted. I really have no attachment to my songs once they are done. While doing them I am totally attached but when finished, the next one takes over. I do music differently and am not trying to avoid your question but answer it honestly. Thanks. Walter

here is one I was listening to as I typed this note. I forgot all about it. It is from a paty about 7 years ago with a real drummer and bassist. I like it but no more or less than any of the other songs. It is from my days of hanging around the sacred steel sound.

It's cool...I'm not trying to grill you, and I half expected you to say exactly that. It is definitely a different approach. I live with my songs for a long time before I let them out, and you sort of meet your songs at the same time the rest of the world does, lol. I've sort of followed you for years, so I know the deal.

That's a real powerful good performance.

Now you told the TV Cameras there were over a quarter of a million, so I'm wondering what happened to the other 147,000????

Let's say you're 50...I really can't tell, but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you started recording songs the day you were born. If you recorded 13 and a half songs every single day of your 50 year old life, you'd be at a quarter of a million. That would be surprising.

:D

I will be 55 in Sept. I started singing spontaneous songs as soon as I could talk (my mother tells me). Songs go through me all day when I am playing and not playing. I have about 50 cd spindles full (100 cds per spindle) hundreds of cassettes, reel to reel tapes, adat, dat, mini disc. I performered 200-300 gigs a year for 25 years, and play 5-10 hours a day (not including gigs). I would play 10 hours before a gig, and then play a few after the gig during that 2-300 gig a year period. I only post a small amount on the net because it takes too long to upload them and the technology was not affordable during most of my career or I would have a warehouse full. The RPM Challenge challenges you to record a cd in the month of Feb. I recorded 32 cds with a sinus infection and working full time and only put in about 1/4 of the playing time I do normally. I am wired different musically than anyone I know, and have built my life around it. I have a complete detached studio on our property that has a bedroom, bath and kitchen. I live out there for days on end. There have been a dozen or more responses like your last one. One guy did the math and figured I was over the million mark. To me all of life is song. I even dream songs as I sleep. Thanks. Walter

if you only take a couple of different progressions and simply write words as you go along ..... hell, MAYBE it's be possible but I think he's being pretty generous about what he considers 'writing' a song.

He DOES do a nice performance .... great blues voice and his made-up-on-the-spot lyrics are suprisingly good.
But, musically, all of his songs sound the same. 4 or 5 different arrangements is all there is with different lyrics over them.
He'll disagree with me but regardless ..... they're all just blues progressions. Even the things he calls jazz aren't anywhere near the realm of jazz.

Don't get me wrong ...... I think he's really good at what he does. But no way he has 250,000 musically distinct songs ...... more like a dozen maybe.

thanks STUTTERHOUSE!

Music is a totally subjective art form. Everyones opinion is just as valid as any one elses. For this reason I get tired of this debate/conversation, or whatever you want to call it. I just do what inspires me. If people dig it great. If they hate it great. Whatever they think is great because it is their opinion :-)Walter

I'm not going to nitpick about what constitutes a song...my problem was with a youtube clip that says a couple of times that he has RECORDED over a quarter of a million songs. It's obviously wrong, because Walt himself has said here that he has recorded about 100,000.

Don't get me wrong...it's an impressive number if it's anywhere near 6 figures. Astounding, really. But I just don't buy that he has recorded a quarter of a million songs, especially since recording gear was admittedly out of his price range for most of his life. I'll give him 10 recordings per day for every day for the last 30 years of his life. That gets you around 100K recordings....WHICH I HAVE TO REPEAT IS AN ASTOUNDING AMOUNT OF RECORDINGS.

But yeah...I wrote 24 blues songs during breakfast this morning, so I can see writing a quarter of a million.

I'm doing everything I can to get Walt more attention. You regular clinic dudes just ignore him. Fuck that. Let's start flaming.

I do appreciate the fact that people take the time to check out what I do and it gets them to thinking. That is what art is supposed to do. Historically when someone has done something different it gets attacked more often than praised by the general public. I have had offers for major record deals, play on the soundtrack for the color of money with robbie robertson and clapton, and many other like offers, if I would stop spontobeat and do the traditional rehearsed/arranged approach. I have said no to them all and was told each time as long as I did spontobeat I would remain poor and unknown. I use to get mad about this but now take it as a compliment. What I do often shakes up ones thinking on how things are done. In my case I show that a person can create a continuous flow of songs/recordings and can record, mix, and package a complete cd in a couple hours. I dig doing what I do so I do it. If working a song over for a year, then spending another year recording it to perfection turned me on (like my peer in austin at the time eric johnson) that is what I would do. I take no offense from any feedback because like I said earlier, art is all about opinion. I offer an open invitation to anyone who wants to come by my studio and cataloug the stuff. I think it would take a couple lifetimes so you better pack a big suitcase! Walter

PS: When I mentioned the technology was not within reach for most of my days I meant the home studio quality I now get. Since I was a young boy I have been recording songs. They were done on the cheapest cassette and reel to reel decks available. I have hundreds of them that sonically are hard to listen to compared to what I am able to record today.

I recorded these this morning. I used my one man band setup with an 1940 national steel style 0 guitar. Walter

OK, I don't want to start a flame-fest. But in all fairness, I have NEVER seen Walter in anyone else's thread but his own. I commented on a few of his songs at first a couple of years ago. But, then I stopped listening when I noticed that A) They're all the same song. B) He never commented on anyone else's songs.

The "ignoring" goes both ways.

Then shut the fuck up before you have your ass handed to you.

Dude, HE'S BUSY!!! It takes a lot of time to record a million songs.

And I was kidding about the STFU part, lol.
