Hello all,
Some of you here may be aware of a dizziness problem that has plagued me since August 1st of this year. In a continuing effort(seems non-ending) to put a name on the problem, I had an appointment yesterday with another Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist and among other things, he performed a basic hearing test - my first in probably 35 years(I'm 53). What I learned surprised me.
Basically my hearing is: flat to about 2k, -25db@3k, -30db@4k, -25db@6k and -5db@8k. This is the average for both ears and 8k is the upper limit for a basic test. The Doctor could tell it was noise-induced hearing loss and not the result of illness, just from reading the results. He smiled knowingly when I told him of my "Rock Band" days and a Marshall stack 25 years ago.
No wonder I was having a hard time with sounds in the 3-8k range, but now that I know what's going on I can compensate. The test cost me $55, but will save me many times that in frustration down the road.
We pay SO much attention to the hardware and software we use and tend to forget about the state of our own ears. Bottom Line... Take care of your ears and get them checked regularly - they are the MOST important piece of equipment we possess for home recording!
