I've heard moments of brilliance from both, then I've heard a bunch of other stuff that's technical/fretboard wizardry, which is cool, but isn't my thing.

I think it's almost too close to call for me, but I'll give the nod to Vai for the DLR albums.

vai or satch?

neither.

Jeff Kollman, gets my vote.

can we update the choices?

id have to vote vai, though i like both. ive only got surfing with the alien by joe, but i've seen some concert stuff and i like him. vai i would have to say i prefer though, based only on his zappa stuff, as that's all ive heard, except some song i dont know the name of, which was quite slow and beautifully happy.

now michael angelo is another fucking matter - vai and satch may play fast and masturbate whilst holding a guitar rather a penis, yet they play with their hearts. that fucker just likes to show off. there is literally no emotion. and you can challenge me with that but that is what i think. i have nothing against people who play fast, as i like a lot of fast players, but he takes the piss.

Just another opinion here but they both are to be admired for dexterity while they leave me cold with emotion and interest. I don't think they move a large audience with their playing.

I like to hear how a guitar weaves through a song versus being the entire main focus.

i couldn't agree more even though i like both. always with ...dreaming #11 are amazing but vai has a few amazing ones as well but then he does the whammy grind dive and drive and it sounds like a high school talent contest. although i also get annoyed at the playing over a boogie on flying in a blue dream but there is some amazing work on there and surfing with the alien especially a few of his new stuff too. besides as a student you should always give your instructor props.....

listening to these guys is a bit like listening to classical music. Some songs can be appreciated by anyone, but for most of them you really need to gain a deeper understanding of the music to get into it. Every time I attempt to learn a Vai song (attempt being the operative word) I instantly appreciate it way more. That said though, both of these guys are capable of playing with very powerful feeling that's obvious to anyone (see Searching by Satch or Lotus Feet by Vai). My vote is for Vai because he very rarely goes into the mindless flailing that guys like Malmsteen, Michael Angelo, and even Joe Satriani are prone to. Even when he does, it's often totally artistic and really puts accross his message (For The Love Of God). That's my two cents, but I can understand if a lot of people need a vocalist to show them proper emotion.

In terms of pure technical ability, it's really hard to say. It seems like any of these guys can play whatever the hell they want. If I had to guess, I'd agree with whoever said that Joe is faster with the pick and Steve is better with legato stuff and the whammy bar.

I didn't vote because I don't believe that you can label any player or style as being better. It's music. Music should be a very personal thing and the listener should have the freedom to like or dislike based on his personal taste. Too many posts in this thread seem to bash the listener for liking or not liking a particular player or style. There are also posts bashing players because they are fast or technically proficient. Ridiculous. If you like it, listen to and enjoy it. If you don't like it, turn it off and move on. Period.

Vai, by FAAAAAAAAAR. If you only count speed as "technical ability" then I don't really know, but if you take a look at the variety of ways Steve can use to play the same phrase creating entirely different feelings out of the same line - it's got to be him

I may sound like a big fag here or something.....but I don't think a piece of music has ever moved me more than watching Vai play "Whispering A Prayer" from just a few feet away last spring......had to hear that song live before I ever got how powerful it was.
I'm that kind of fag too. I almost cried when he played this song. I know many people say "there's no feeling in these songs" etc, but frankly I don't think you've seen a live performance of this else you'd have totally changed your mind. You might not like the song, or Vai or anything, but just watch him playing this live and you'll see how much he is into the song, into every single note of it.

Who Cares? Can either of them play with feeling? (No.)
Ah, typical typical typical reply, it always comes about. Please. I mean PLEASE. Just watch the song above (download a live video clip, you must be able to find it somewhere on the net).

I found a short review of Vai's DVD, 'Live at the Astoria' here.
Okay, pretty typical review, BUT, it's missing a key piece of info. Anyone else notice it and wonder why?
