Why do some many think to play music for competition. I dont. Some do act as if you make a mistake, you suck. That is you blow it in front of a crowd. Why cant they just appreciate the music? Not a UFC boxing match you know. You don't actually get to cut their heads off.

Making mistakes can lead you to new ground. Learn from them.

The way I see it we all play until we get to the MESA. You are so far up the mountain, and we all have better days and worse to come. No one is better just a different style. After all it is not rocket science, just rock and roll.

Mistakes can be minimalized, through practice, but will still always come down to luck.

A loud voice and a tuned guitar can 'take the day'. NO, Seize it!

Most guitarist make mistakes - but at what level is the question - Take EVH - I’ve heard him make mistakes - but in the overall performance most of the time it doesn’t sound like a mistake - so why it’s not a competition - it is a level of skill sets that are pretty high - and if you aspire to that level it’s kind of hard not to judge yourself - so in a way it’s is a competition with yourself.

There are plenty of examples where mistakes were left in songs - mostly because they sounded great - but I don’t know if it leads you to new ground - IME A mistake lets you hear something you didn’t intend to play - but not necessarily new ground.

I got fired from one regularish job. I used to play in a band for shows. Lots of sight reading and usually within my capability. Then we did west side story. If you get lost in the bass part, you cannot find your way back in. I got lost twice in 10 shows. never got asked back. Mistakes are just not allowed. I've done it again for other production companies and been fine - but in my own shows where I am in charge of everybody, part of my job is to complete a show report. It features sections for sound, lights, actors and musicians and things like "trumpet player crucified the high note in XXXX". The MD is copied in and this often happens when we have a dep in, and if they do it twice, they're gone. Like me. When I'm doing this job - I need everything to be exactly the same, every show. Obviously, one-offs are looser, but in others, improvisation, or mistakes are just not allowed.

I was a flight medic with LIfeStar. Up in a helicopter with a life on the line, you cannot make mistakes. That was my career.

I old and gonna retire in 5 years. I play/record for fun. And in the world of rock n roll, i can make as many mistakes as I want. Shit, I'm still gonna fade the sky.

See, that is not grabbing a couple guys and playing some 4 chord rock n' roll. That is something with a lot of parts. I don't want that much accompaniment when I play. Lots of unnecessary clutter in there. Supportive instruments. My thinking is more blue collar, with a tuxedo paycheck.

Playing music instruments other than your primary, will help the primary too. Play a few.

Ha! In my very distant yoof I loaned my bass guitar rig to a guy in a Big Band as he wanted to replace his double bass with a guitar. I sat in with a few sessions. He would play the dots most of the time but then the music dirc' would give him a score peppered with accidentals..."Ah! This will be a busk"

People who are callin others names, and making personal competitions haven't ascended up that mountain. You know. The MESA. You get way way up there. And it becomes flat peak. That flat top has enough room for all.

Big groups of people are hard. Try to get 3-4 working adults to practice 2 times a month. Near impossible. One always backs out. Ronnie will choose her kids every time an I dont blame her. etc.

So's, if you go there and make a club I cannot get into. And I will go and make a club you cannot get into. Fine by me..

it is not that old rock n roll. That is okay. You like playing classical. That you probably got from your parents or a school. There is nothing for me there. Those aren't the songs I like. WE adapt and become. But it is not the same thing. Rock evolved from that noise. Commanding the most powerful pathways in McDonald's packaging. Give me hamburgers and fries.

I was taught to read music early on. We had it in grade school. I was taking guitar lessons at 11, had my music book with all the notes and dots. I knew EGBDF and FACE, sharps and flats, rests, treble and bass clefs. It just never clicked. It just would not go from eyes to brain to fingers. It might as well have been Egyptian hieroglyphics for me. Reading music is, in essence a language. I just suck at languages.

Let me listen to it and BINGO. It all made sense. It was music. Ear to brain to fingers works much better.

FWIW, I took French in high school and two semesters in college. That didn't take either.
