Usb Mixer Hum

Hi everyone.

I recently bought a new mixer that has a built in audio interface.

Unfortunately when I plug it in via USB to my pc I get a ground loop type hum.

I tarried disconnecting all other devices and unplugging all but the essentials but it is still present.

Is there anything I can do to eliminate it??

Having checked it a little further it seems like it is actually between the mixer and the monitors that the issue is being caused as the hum does not come out on recordings nor does it on headphones.

However, it only happens when the USB Cable is connected to the PC. Monitor speakers plugged into the Mixer without USB and there is no hum.

Are the monitors, mixer, and PC all plugged into the same outlet? Try different configurations there. You could try using a Ground Lift for the monitors, but it is really never a great idea to do that.

I had a similar issue, connecting an alternate listening system, that was connected to a different electrical circuit. THIS little box fixed the hum.

I'd never suggest lifting a mains ground to cure a hum problem. I guess in a 110 volt country it's a bit less likely to cause instant death than it is in a 240 volt world but it's still very bad practice.

However, if the connection between the mixer and your monitors is balanced, you can safely disconnect the SIGNAL ground (pin 1 XLR, sleeve on TRS) at the mixer end. That often cures hum problems.
