Monotony in Nashville. Heatwave in Ammityville!

Oh, and I'm a little woozy tonight...{burp..hic} but that rear membrane is what you might call passive electrically but man is it active acoustically!

Tomorrow remind me I had a good time and I'll explain! {klunk} I had whatever that guy on the floor was having!

Whoao!!!

I suppose it wouldn't have anything to do with "sandpaper polishing" the capsules, would it?

Yep, all ya have to do is ask, show appreciation anyway you can, and do something productive or helpful with with knowledge, right?

Glad to see you around and doing alright! Sure am VERY sad about missin' the concert! Work was kinda being the pits then and getting that way again. Time to quite the blow-job...

I am really really sorry SP I didn't know you were so inclined. Personally, I stay away from woman with dicks, even if they're only 1/4"

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Hey guys, back off. I know a lot of you haven't a clue as to who Stephen Paul is, but Stephen Paul is to mics as Stephen Hawking is to physics. And believe me, I'm not exaggerating one bit. HIs unique modifications to classic mics are legendary.

Please show some courtesy here and cut him some slack. In comparison to Stephen, I'm still a toddler in nursery school when it comes to microphones. Most of the mics out today owe a direct debt to Stephen's decades of pioneering research in condenser microphone design.

Hey Harvey, I know SP, no malice intended whatever, I can assure you :)
Actually, cool to see him here

Yo!

Hey Stephen Paul!
Your input is wanted on these mics also, fill me in on these rear diaphragms! Also, in your opinion, what are some REALLY decent low cost mics you've run across? Does a mic really have to cost $3000 to be high quality? Its outrageous. Are there any low cost mics that can be made alot better with simple do-it-yourself modifications? The NT1000 and NTK seem to be getting good reviews...
And lastly, this is for anyone thats ever had experience with them... any opinions on the "under a grand" Soundelux mics?
Thanks,
Paul

If you ask SP nicely he might sell you one of his conversions cheaply

True... truth is... after I have everything else I need, I'm not afraid to spend money on a good mic. I've been eyeballing $2000 preamps for awhile now. Right now, though, I AM interested in some good around $500 mics, and if there is a $300 conversion that I can do down the line to make it double its performance, well... I'm on it. :)
Stephen, I beleive, does conversions on mics that already cost about $2000 and up, if I'm correct. I may not be. Hey Stephen! How much for a conversion? You work on anything or only specific mics? You should sell a home-persons kit for modifying a super cheapy like the NT-1 into something magnificent and mass market it, complete with instructional video! :)
THAT would make you some nice money and cause alot of hype! :)
Paul

Stephen does do electronic modifications to mics, but it's in new diaphragm building that his expertise really shines.

The old classic condenser mics were originally made using 6 micron PVC (poly-vinyl-chloride) as the base material, then the diaphragm was coated with a thin conductive layer of either gold or aluminum. Keep in mind the thickness of a human hair is around 20 microns. Later on, when the PVC base material started to break down, the industry switched to Mylar which was more stable.

Stephen's work with thinner Mylar led to his use of 3 micron Mylar material, and once the industry learned how Stephen managed to stabilize and tension the new material, they soon introduced their own 3 micron diaphragm mics. By that time, Stephen had moved on to successfully building .9 micron, .7 micron, and even .6 micron diaphragms, most of which are owend by the big studios, or top producers like Al Schmitt and George Massenburg, to name just a couple of Stephen's clients.

He's currently building diaphragms that are only 4/10th of one micron thick, and he has developed a new process of gold coating (eliminating the "sputtering" used by other mic manufacturers) that is very evenly applied, to where the deviations in coating are held and measured to within a few nano angstroms.

For those of you without an understanding of all this techno-babble (which includes me), we're talking fuckin' THIN !!! The slightest updraft would keep this thing floating in mid-air for hours. By way of comparison, a standard sheet of paper is about 500 times thicker than one of Stephen's new mic diaphragms.

What makes it so amazing to me is that Stephen doesn't just build "state of the art" stuff; he's actually pushing the "state of the art" forward.

I didn't mean to go on for so long, but most people outside the industry have never really heard of Stephen Paul, or even understand what it is that he does. He doesn't just "modify mics", any more than Antonio Stradivarii "just made fiddles".

We all owe Stephen Paul a big debt for his contributions to the music industry, though most people don't realize it. Let me be one of the first to publicly acknowledge that debt.
