hi, What is a good sync box for syncing up two tascam tsr8 8-tracks?
thanks, kk

fr. tascam story....
TASCAM MTS-1000 was a sophisticated synchronization device allowing MIDI sequencers or other MIDI devices to be precisely synchronized to SMPTE-based recording equipment. It would also allow you to lock up two tape machines.- The TASCAM TSR-8 was an 8-track recorder using 1/2" tape on 10 1/2" reels with the ability to synchronize to other machines using the MTS1000 or the ES-50/ ES-51

I really do want to know, I'm not making a joke.

(assuming that you are asking about the sync device because you desire synchronization between two tsr8s, for consequent 16 tracking abilities.)
why do you want more than 8 tracks?

It will be 14 tracks, since he'll lose track 8 on both for the sync data.
I'd like to do this myself because it would allow more control per-instrument at mixdown.. submixing them into groups can make things a little awkward.
It would also allow me to have more stereo rather than recording in mono and trying to create an artificial stereo image with panning, reverb and an SPL enhancer. And I'd be able to keep the vocal harmony tracks intact rather than having to bounce them down and erase the originals.

But then again, I'm trying to create progressive rock with large amounts of layered instruments.. I don't know what kind of music he (or you) are doing.

BTW, I only get 7 tracks to begin with since I'm already using the sync track to drive a sequencer.

2 tsr8's

hi, where do i begin? Thanks, by the way, for the feedback. Looks like it's going to be a mts-1000. Stalemayte, I have 14 fingers, i need a track for each....to capture and manipulate the full essence of my 20 string guitar playing. :D But, seriously....sometimes I have more than 8 elements in a mix
(believe it or not) and I'm not real fond of bouncing. Let's see....

track 1......lead vocal
2......harmony vocal(s)
3......acoustic guitar
or track 3,4,5 three mics on an acoustic guitar (or two)
4......bass guitar
5......keyboards
6 & 7 drum machine or submixed real drummer
or track 6,7,8,9, real drums
8......lead guitar
9......sometimes fiddle, sometimes harmonica, cello, sitar etc.
10......sometimes double-tracked lead vocal
11......blowing bubbles in a glass of water (like "yellow submarine')
12,13,14 three real horns in a horn section or whatever!
(this could be done with one mic I suppose)
but anyway....I want more tracks!

Right now, I use 2 to 3 on vocals......usually 2 on rythmn guitar
1 on 2nd (lead) guitar.....1 or 2 on keyboards (piano, strings etc)
1 on bass.....1 on some rythmic coloring element.....so you see...just
with this i'm over my eight. I have one song where the sound of the
ocean intros the song and weaves in and out throughout the song
and fades on the seashore sounds....so that's one track just for the
friggin' waves and foghorns. 14 tracks just gives me more flexibility
and options (though I sometimes think too many options is no option
at all). I've also decided to shit-can my 16 track digital recorder and
go "totally" analog.....even to mixing down to 1/2" tape....then to cd
digital.....though I do, of course, use some digital processors and such.
But as far as the recording media....it's gonna be tape. But that's
another story I really don't wanna get started on. I prefer the sound
....period....don't ask me why....I prefer the "cumbersome", slower, no
"UNDO" aspect too. Oh no I don't wanna start this Dig/Ana thing off,
so forget it.....ok? So anyway....thanks for the help on my question guys
and take care. keep on makin' de music. kk

oops......I forgot I was on the Analog only forum.

thanks mayte...I'd love for you to hear it.....but at the rate I've been going it could be a while. But when I get some presentable stuff down I'll try and get it to ya. I don't even know how to send music over the internet or post audio!
duh.......I've got recordings of my stuff done in studios and home recordings done on equipment inferior to the tsr8 ...but nothing done with my current set-up.....and I've had it more than two years! Life and gigs and travel and lack of gear money have all contributed to this (it's not my unfocused procrastination)(or focused procrastination) I just want to do my self-produced records/cd's as good as I possibly can. It's taken me awhile to get all the peices for my little studio....the outboard gear, the mixer, tapedeck, mics....I just gigged enuff to purchased a new guitar...mainly for recording with....and I still need a few more mics......I'm not a gear-slut persay, I just don't want to put all this energy into recording and not have it sound as good as I can afford...from a
technical, production point of view. Yeah, I'd rather have a great inspired performance on not-so-good equipment than a lack-luster one on GREAT equipment....(I'd rather have both). I'm just trying to fit the peices together on a not-so-bad recording setup really......a setup as good as I can afford.
Don't want to put my new cd on and say damn, I should have got those Peluso mics instead of these...etc.etc. ahh, I guess it never ends...does it.
Anyway, If it works out and we keep in touch...i'll see what I can do
as far as getting some music to you. Didn't mean to get so long-winded.
What sort of music do you write/perform/record? ta, kk
