Just picked up a turntable for the first time in almost 20 years.

It is used, but good shape. I am getting a significant amount of distortion. I don't think an untrained ear would hear it so much, but it's pretty bad in my mind.

What is the likely culprit? Is that indicate a worn stylus? The phono preamp is a brand new one, and I played around with the output level which did not help. The distortion remained consistent regardless of gain from the pre.

I just wanted to know what the likely cause was before I drop more cash on a new stylus.

Thanks.

First things to check:

Is the stylus worn?

Is the anti-skate adjustment set?

Is the tracking weight set correctly?

Just some simple things that usually correct most problems. If you just notice the distortion in the high end, chances are the anti-skate needs a touch of adjustment.;)
