how do you guys think the TUBE MP by ART compares to the DMP3 as far as the quality of sound?

Advice given to me has been that with the cheaper pres you're generally better off with the less 'coloured' types. Tubes in cheap gear are a bit of a gimmick and don't add a nice musical colour to audio in the same way that high end 'proper' tube gear does.

I own a DMP-3 and like it a lot. Lots of nice CLEAN gain.

Maybe someone has used both?

It's best if you can A/B them yourself.

The tube mp gets slagged off quite a bit around here, there are a list of moifications for it available which are supposed to make an enormous improvement. I'd only consider getting one used and heap on ebay and trying out those modifications.

I have both and use both regularly.

The tube MP is good for snare drum, Bass guitar and the occassional tuba where the crunch of the tube at the peak of the transient works well. But it is noisier under most circumstances then the DMP-3.
The DMP-3 is nicer on voices, acoustic guitars and open room micing (such as percussion -flute-drum overheads) where it's quietness really shines.

I also have a pile of RNP / RNCs to compare them too. They each have their place.

I have used both. The Tube MP is good for some things, but not others. The DMP3 will record anything nice and clean, then you can get out your crayons and "colour" to taste.

The nicest thing I can say about the tube MP is that its a pretty good Lil' bass guitar DI,for the cash..as for as a mic pre..Hummm lets see...Its a good inexpensive bass DI..Try and stay away from mic preamps that are cheap that have "light bulbs" in them{IMHO}..Ive never used or heard the DMP :)

jonmmartin,

It depends on what you want for a sound.
The RNP gives you a very big full bodied signal, a little colored, particularly through the mids. The DMP is a more jangly bright sounding thing.

If you are going for that crisper lighter sound for hard strummed guitar I usually count on the DMP. If I am recording solo picked guitar that I want bigger than life, I use the RNP.

Although many good recording are made on all kinds of stuff, I would not choose the Tube MP for acoustic type recording, particularly anything you want a clean quiet signal on. Bass guitar... Guitar amps... yes! violin - flute acoustic... nope!

For acoustic guitar stuff I generally rank my pres:

RNP (unless heavily strummed)
DMP-3
Mackie vlz pres
Tube MP

are you guys implying that the TUBE MP is superior at DI'ing bass guitar than the DMP3?
