Transfering files TO MR8?

Could someone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong? I would like to transfer files onto the MR8 in the USB mode and I think I'm making this more difficult than it has to be. I have received MP3 files from my friend over instant message ... converted it into a wav file, opened up the Fostex Wavmanager utility program and am attempting to put it on the unit as a 'track 1'. I select the PC To MR-8, find the wav file (that reads arise.wav, 8kHz, 8bit, MON, 1732KB ... arise is the name of the song), highlight it but all the 'Select Track' options 1 - 8 are still grayed out. I hit export anyway, it asks me to confirm with the 'PC to MR-8' box with the document location, asks me if I am sure I want to overwrite what is there (which, by the way, there is nothing there although I did name the song in the device that I want the track to go to). I select OK to overwrite ... then it tells me to select a wav. file! It is a wav. file!!!! Please help me. This is why I bought the machine so my friend and I can trade music back and forth, maybe throw it onto Cakewalk (which I have Home Studio so I might need to do something with that first ... not sure), play with it, edit, then send it back. ANY help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated!

Well, first of all you have to title the .wav file TR01, TR02, or whatever/wherever you want it to go.

Not sure about it being 8 bit, but I would think that naming it approriately will fix this.

Is there anything on the CF card?

not yet ... like I said, I just entered the name of the song after I completely reformatted the card to get it off the initial screen. I'll try to rename the 'song' track one since that is where it's going. just doesn't sound like that's the fix. god, i hope so tho.

EXCELLENT!!! That solved my first problem ... named it 'tr01' ... duh ... that's what they are called when they come from the machine. Now it tells me the sampling frequency is not matched. Almost there .....

You just tell that little red whore to accept whatever sampling frequency you damned well want it to ...AND LIKE IT!!!

I guess changing the sampling freq shouldn't be too hard.

God, just when I was gettin excited! Alright, I've tried to convert this damn file in about every possible attribute from 8kbs 8 bit mono all the way up to 48kbs 16bit stereo! Also, in the conversion program, there are different formats including 'PCM', 'Ogg Vorbis [mode 1 thru 3+]' along with like Windows Media Audio V1, V2 and 14 other selections ... ... maybe I should be asking what the best conversion program to use with little conflict with the MR-8 (and maybe free ). Sorry I sound like such an idiot with this stuff but, damn, I want to make music!!!!!!!!!!

It's been a while but I think it should be a 16 bit, 44.1 kHz, mono .wav file.

Do you have a multitracking program you can open it with and save it with different attributes?

I have Cakewalk Home Studio. I just found a freeware site for conversion ... http://www.nch.com.au/switch/ ... it looks like it has everything I would need without using Cakewalk but I will if I have to. I'm not sure I've ever used CW for this yet but I'm totally willing to learn. However, open up that site ... it looks extremely sufficient. Thanks for your help. I absolutely LOVE this forum for just this type of thing!

Sorry, don't know dink about CW.

Not sure I've ever had to do this even with ntrack....
Ntrack is probably cheaper though.

NEVER MIND !!! I solved my own problem. The MR-8 takes 22.05kHz, 16bit, MONO wav. files. I swear one of the only ones I didn't try. Then, like an idiot, I just looked at the attribute and format of the stuff I got FROM the MR-8 to PC ... and ... BINGO. I felt like an ass but mixed with the really cool feeling of loading up my new 1GB card with all my works-in-progress! The sky's the limit, I guess, eh? Thanks anyway!!!!!

Are you using "extended" mode?

Page three of this data sheet states in normal mode it is 16 bit/44.1 kHz

I never tried "extended" mode, but I would think that now, since you have a 1 gig CF card, you'd want to use normal mode.
I'd think it would make a noticable difference.

Thanks for the link. Yeah, I was in extended mode. Just used to conserving the space but I guess I have it to play with now, huh? Good info my friend ... and thanks for your patience and help!
