I used to know, but he's moved a few times. He's in a pretty rural bumfuck part of the state, but that doesn't really narrow it down.

What state is it? He did tell me roughly where he lives once.

I think it's up on a hill.

Hey guys, thanks for the concern, but I'm fine. I live in Dryden, VA. The flooding is in West VA, & is a pretty good distance from where I live. Here's a pic to show you all how far away from that terrible shit I am:

That's some bad shit going on up there, I feel for all those people...If you look southwest of the red balloon & see Knoxville, that's about a 3 hour drive from here (that's where the closest Guitar Center is)... Again I'm fine & thanks for the concern....

Miner: Glad you're not in the middle of that shit.

Short sidetrack: I love that Behringer board. Holy hell was everything easier. And the recording seems to have come out great. Over 5 hours of music throughout the day. I just started some preliminary mixing and I'm really impressed (I should have a couple of samples tomorrow). I still have some kinks to work out but this thing is awesome. In fact, if I were looking for an interface with lots of inputs I'd get this. To be honest, I was more worried about my laptop crashing or Studio One locking up on me. Thankfully, neither happened. Happy Sunday, boys and girls.

Glad you're ok, miner. Now I can lay on the sofa with a glass of wine watching Glastonbury highlights, guilt free!

Yup, glad you're good miner. I don't know why I thought you were in West Virginia. I guess all that hillbilly land kind of blends together in my mind. :D

It's cool guys, I really appreciate the concern though, just shows you guys here are true friends!!!:thumbs up:

Miner, good to hear that you're high and try. Well, dry at least... :)

This is the full-speed intentional-tempo version of the sludgy thing that I posted earlier.

This is the Les Paul through the JCM800 on the low input, with the FireFly Fuzz. Pretty much the exact settings from my FireFly demo video from a couple months ago (high preamp gain, middle master volume, fuzz pedal engaged). The feedback guitar has reverb added in the DAW. Are the guitars too dark to work in a mix?

The bass is a P-bass through a JHS Colour Box with the preamp gain cranked. It's a blend of a mic'd 8" bass amp combo and a direct signal.

This is one of my first tracks to not quantize the drums, and you can definitely tell. I'm no drummer, so I lose the beat a few times (OK, many times). I'm getting better, but I've still got a ways to go. It's funny to look at the MIDI data against the grid...it's not even close. But the guitars and bass are tracked against the loosey-goosey drums. So at least it's all wrong together :D I've been trying some things with compression on the kick, snare, and overheads. It still sounds dry instead of the fat sound I'm going for. I'll keep practicing...I'll retrack all of this at some point when I come up with some lyrics to shriek over the top of this.

That sounds pretty wicked to me. Real thick. I got no problem with the guitars. Awesome feedback.

So what drums are those? Is that an e-kit?

Tad - this sounds great! Really like the sound of the guitars, their thick and heavy but their not just mud - they're still clear. The bass seems to clip at around 2:10.

Tadpui - you beauty.
Thick, angry, feedback squalling stuff.
I like the loose drums
I like the whole thing - needs a melody & some words of course.

Tadpui....
That's a cool rock groove. I love the feedback. Guitar tone is good IMO. I'm doing drums now too. I'm no drummer either...so I can relate.

That being said, I liked your drums on this one

Hey thanks fellas, it feels pretty darn good to get kudos from the likes of you guys!

Thanks! Is it weird that I enjoyed sitting in a room just making feedback for half an hour while tracking this? :D I used a Boss CS-3 and held the guitar right up to the cabinet, just fretted the chords and didn't pick them. It was utter end-of-the-world mayhem in the room.

Oh, and yeah, the drums were triggered from my little Yamaha e-kit. The samples are a vintage Gretch round badge kit, with a 70's Suprophonic snare. It's my favorite snare sample that I have, although I'd like to beef it up a little. It's got a great pop to it, but it just sounds a little thin to me.

Thanks! I feel like I'm finally getting to know this JCM800 after owning it for almost a year. I'm weird about amps like that...it takes a while to figure out where the sweet spots are.

I'll check out the tracks at 2:10 and see if anything clips or pops at that spot.

Ray
Thanks man! I'm hoping to cobble together some words this week and try to track them this weekend. Problem is, all of the melodies I've tried this far are above my vocal range. I keep wanting this Ozzy kind of thing, but that's well outside of my capabilities. So I'll have to find a compromise somewhere.

Jimmy
Thanks man, I just can't seem to hold down a solid groove for more than a few measures without the inevitable slow-down or missed beat. But hey, I didn't drop my sticks or completely stop playing on this take, so that made it a keeper :D

Bill
Thanks, appreciate it!

Bob
Thanks man, it's a good sign if you're digging it :)

Uh no. It would be weird if you didn't enjoy that! Being in the room with a big loud amp is one of the joys of recording big loud amps. :D

That's the secret to getting harmonically relevant feedback that sits with the song. I need to do it more often. I recorded a section of a lead like that one time. It was a simple line on one string and I just fretted the notes without picking and it sounded killer.

Are those samples pre-compressed or EQd?

That's a good question. When I listen to them raw, I don't detect much, if any, EQ or compression on them. If there is any post-processing on the samples, it's pretty transparent.

I'm still on the hunt for sampled toms that don't make me cringe. The ones I'm using here are those Gretsch ones. They're kinda dead, which I like. But they don't sit in a mix very well. They stick out too much on the hardest hits, and totally disappear on any hits that are less than full-strength.

Tad: That's great man!!!! I can hear Scott Weiland's vocals on this dude, reminds me of STP....I may be able to help with the tom search, depends on what SDX's you've got...Which Superior kit are you using??? Sounds pretty realistic to me man, good job!!!
