Hey Boob! You gotta keep humpin it as long as you can. :D

I have a gig this week opening for another shitty classic 80s sleaze rock band. Actually, this band isn't as cheesy as the last one, but still pretty cheesy. How do I keep getting these gigs with shit 80s/90s bands? :cursing:
well, think of it as a chance to watch them plotz over your rig and tone.
Your wifey doesn't prolly let you tease the women anymore so now you can tease the bad-tone guitar players!

Lol. Most of these dinosaur acts have great players and good tones. And big tour buses. But the whole thing, I'm just ugh. I didn't like these guys when they were relevant, now I'm still having to deal with it! I actually get embarrassed for these guys sometimes. I get it that they're holding on for dear life, and many of them are actually nice people, but these once huge bands are now not even filling clubs that local bands can easily fill.

Hmmm, still its a bit of fun playing live isn't it. If they're just doing it 'cos they enjoy it and aren't expecting some resurgence in popularity then that's OK... doesn't mean I'd pay to watch them though.

Fuck man, that's way better than that other stuff you were doing. So what did you do to make this one so much better than your last tracks?

Good job. I was singing along to it.
haha, you just don't like grunge!

Didn't really do anything special. EQ and volume on the amp are all the same, mic position is the same. I just dialed the gain right back on the overdrive channel to get a more punky tone.

The main rhythm guitar is just tracked on the bridge humbucker. For the guitar that drops in and out to leave space for the lead I just coil tapped/split it to give it a different feel. I'm gonna switch to the neck humbucker and add a shit load of wah wah to fill the gaps - I specifically want to stick the lead in the gaps and not have it on there as a third guitar.

Then I have the tricky business of the fucking vocals... hoping a mate of mine is gonna do it tomorrow, she's a pretty good singer and a huge BR fan. You're welcome to do a vocal take if you like though, mate.

Ironically, given that my other song took loads of fucking about this 1:30 song actually took me 4:30 of tracking...

I never stay to watch them. I just play and leave. I didn't like these guys in 1988, I don't like them now. They just seem unhappy to me. I can understand, sort of. They used to sell out arenas and shit, now they're schlepping around playing small bars and clubs to a handful of middle aged fatasses. I can only imagine that it must be a slap in the dick. You know, some dinosaur acts still grab the attention of the younger crowd. I saw Iggy and Motorhead last year and it was full of really excited youngsters that knew all the words to all the songs. That's the ideal scenario. You get old, your crowd stays young and enthusiastic.

I'm also opening for The Dictators next month. Classic NYC CBGB era "punk" band. I love em. I will be staying for that. I bet the crowd will be young too.

Motorhead are a special case though. I saw them supporting Foo Fighters 6 or 7 years ago... they certainly weren't old or bored and the kids there were going fucking mental for it

This is what's wrong with music today. There's not one single valid reason for Motorhead opening for the shitty fucking Foo Fighters.

that's really the key I think.

I LOVE playing ..... I never do a gig where I'm just going thru the motions.

And people respond to that ..... a very common comment I get is that it's obvious I'm having fun or that it's obvious I love music.

And even young people respond to that regardless of the music I'm playing.

So the old acts that are bitter and/or bored get the lack of response they deserve.

Fucking bass players. Played a gig last night, the bass player's new(ish) Hartke amp had the lights on but nobody home. Luckily I had my Marshall TSL head in the van as a spare so I let him use that. Four or five songs from the end, the Marshall stops working. I go over, all the lights are out, the fucker is red hot. I check the back and he's plugged the 16 Ohm output into his 8 Ohm cab. I reckon the output transformer is fried - the tubes look pristine but it's blowing mains fuses instantaneously.

On the plus side, great gig. I had to plug silly-bollocks direct into the PA to finish the gig, but the audience were loving it.

Damn, that fucker needs to fix your shit. That sucks.

Don't assume the output transformer is dead though. I mean, it could be, but it might be something before that. Tubes can look good and still be very bad. Swap around power tubes and see if it still pops fuses.

fucking hell, what a bell-end... but then I suppose he is a failed guitarist...

Ah, it wasn't a normal show - it was an all day job in Hyde Park. Motorhead followed by QOTSA (who were shit) then Foos.

Yeah, he offered me his gig money straight away. He's a good lad at heart, just a bit dim and non-technical. Him and the band together will pay, seeing as it was his responsibility to bring a backup. I don't have enough fuses to bugger about like that today and I'm not exactly sure how to go about it. :D

The amp sounded bloody great up to that point. :D

I'm a fucking nazi about bandmates bringing backup stuff. I mean, I sure do, so I expect the others to do the same. I was doing one gig a while back, the other guitar player broke a string and asked to use my LP. I was playing my SG, the LP was my backup that night. After like the third song he comes over and asks me to use my LP, and I'm like, "you're fucking crazy." This dude wears belts and rings and bracelets and all sorts of postcard-punk attire, so no, he's not fucking up my Les Paul. Lol. His guitar looks like it's been through a wood chipper. So anyway, I just threw him a string and told him to fix it fucking fast. Now I hammer his ass before any show to bring spare shit.

Yep. I bring two amps. I bring fuses. I bring two guitars. I bring strings. There's a spare power amp in my PA rack. Throwing your hands up in the air when something goes wrong doesn't keep the show on the road.

Exactly. For a guitar player, how much extra effort is it really to bring a second head, second guitar, and a bag full of spare parts? Knock on wood, I've never had any real problems myself, but if something happens, I have a complete second rig ready to go.
