Looks pretty good! Grover tuners? That's nice if that's what they are.

LOL - I saw that and my immediate response was 'must be faux Grover tuners' - I'm so not a trusting person. Alas the photo's not high enough res to tell, but you can see the reflection of the guy taking the pic, sort of, in the central section. :D

I'll contact him and ask for photo of the neck body joint & then suss his finances out. There's a hard case but I figure it'll be extra but that's OK too.
Thanks for the detail.
I checked the Epi site...it's a "worn" G-400. They seem to be the only ones that come in brown...

David,
I checked him out on fbook -he's a hipster!
Has three guitars, plays Guns'nRoses not too well & ACDC even worse through a small combo Marshall amp - sounds SS.

Lol. The SG400 is maybe the highest-end of the Epi SGs, or it used to be, so they could be real Grovers.

Not that it matters. Tuners are simple machines and really have very little to do with tuning stability. They're a worm gear. If they're not broken or loose, any tuner is fine.

Re. the pickups in my 90s-ish LP Standard from several pages ago - just slacked the strings off and took out the bridge one and nothing on the back plate but "Gibson USA" so still none the wiser. If I take the back plate off (four quite small Philips head screws) and I likely to learn any more, or just wasting my time, do you think?

Ok, toanthreaders - Here's a quick JVM tone for your perusal.

The first part of the clip is Crunch channel, orange mode. Vol. 4, Bass 3.5, Middle 5, Treble 5.5, Gain 9.

Lead solo: OD2 channel, orange mode. Vol. 7, Bass 4, Middle 4.5, Treble 2.5, Gain 1.5.

Master vol 6.5, Resonance 3, Presence 4.5.

SM57 on the grille (not very carefully placed! :D), Standard 1960A cab.

A beardy weirdy? - you should be able to knock another $20 off the price - he'll be hurting bad for an organic barista made civet coffee and will do you a good deal!:laughings:

No don't go any further. So at least you know they are Gibson pickups. That narrows it down to about 100 options. :D

If you're really curious, send Gibson an email with some pics and your serial number. They may know exactly what's what, or they may be able to help you identify what you got.

OK thanks. That's what I thought. It was just curiosity. Lucky I took a pic because I nearly put it back in the wrong way around... I thought "that doesn't look right..."

Bubba,
Those tones are very "rockist".
Can you set it for post rock?
Nice top end - I don't know about bottom end in Marshalls.

That sounds like a very nice guitar for the money.

Thanks, Ray. The bottom end sounds a little woofy to me. It sounds good and solid with the band, though. I bet it's the G12-75 speakers doing the woofing. The bass control isn't set particularly high. I chose that piece because it does all the tones from low-down chunk to up-high sizzle in one take. It's "Homicide" by 999.

Sounds pretty awesome Bubba. Classic Marshall tone in a modern package.

I use almost those same OD2 "lead" settings, except I run my mids up like around 8.

They are Grovers. They're the same as in my Indonesian Tele Custom which I sold a couple of months ago.

Thanks. I just tried the mids on 8 and it doesn't quite suit my guitar. They're quite "bitey" pickups in the first place so I get a bit of unuseable howl, there. I bet it suits the LP really well. :D

Here's a useful Infographic I came across today. It may help us to discuss our tones more accurately.

Haha yeah, I forgot to mention I roll the highs back to like 3.

Hold on, I'll look....

Yeah, OD2 orange: Bass 5 - Mid 8 - Treb 3 - Gain 2

On the semi-rare occasion I kick it up to that channel for a lead, that's about where I keep it.

I think that sounds really good, Bubba.

Not sure of the song but the bluesy rhythm riff with all the gain on it sounds quite low and rumbley to me.

The lead stuff that comes in at about 1:25 sounds great. Are you wigging a knob back and forth there or can we just hear your fingers on the fretboard?
