His playing is a big part of it. He plays just right for that classic rock sounding stuff, he plays the right guitar, and that style and guitar is just right for that amp. It's a match made in heaven, and that sound is pretty heavenly.
Yep, his playing is a big part of it along with the guitar, but that amp's smokin'...

Quick question, the G12H I have is supposed to be a re-creation/ape of the speakers he's using, right??? The 30 watters....

Haha, awesome. I'll tell Shawn you're almost ready to buy it back.

Yep. Like I mentioned, I could swing it right now, but I probably need to wait until my $$$ officially start coming in, which will be in May. Not that far off though...

Tad: Gotta thank you, because you reminded me of the Reverb site. I had an account there from last year, but it was just crickets until this week....Thanks again dude...:).

Yup. They basically had two common kinds of Greenbacks way back then - the G12M an the G12H. M is medium magnet weight and H is heavy. Either could be had with 75hz or 55hz "bass" cones. There were other variations, but those two were the main ones.

The G12M 75hz is the classic Greenback.
The G12H 55hz is the Hendrix speaker.

That rig in that vid would be pretty much exactly what Hendrix used. Late 60s Super Lead with Marshall "100 logo" G12H-55hz cabs.

That's about 10 grand worth of guitar, amp, and cabs he's goofing off with there.

Wow, that much? One of the cabs seems to have a little tag or badge in the corner, whereas the other doesn't. Do you think that's a reissue cab?

I was in a shop called Dawson's music in Manchester yesterday. They have a great selection of Gibson LPs in there - at some pretty fancy fucking
prices, too. Out of about fifty LPs on the hangers, 30 or so were weight-relieved standard models. Out of the higher end (customs and custom shop specials) the tell-tale signs of being on the hangers for donkey's years were in evidence; tarnished hardware, dried-out fingerboards, blackened strings etc. Shame. They aren't going to shift a three grand (gbp) guitar without making it look absolutely pristine.

The nicest one (IMO) was a white LP custom, although the gold pups made me feel ill. :D

Could be, but I bet not. The 100 logo has probably fallen off the top cab. It is damn near 50 years old. They look legit to me, as far as I can tell from a youtube video.

The head alone is probably worth $5000. The cabs, if all original, could fetch $2000 each. Throw in the guitar, and it's all over $10,000.

Lol. Yeah, that's my big turnoff too with Customs. Gold hardware. Yuck. I can tolerate it on some models though.

Phew. Can you imagine turning up to a show with that setup and the twatty sound guy says "you're a little loud there, sporty - I have no control up here; I have you completely off the desk. Could you drop the volume by about half?" :D

I don't dig LPs as you know, but a white Custom would be nice in the collection, a la Mr. Steve Jones. :)

Lol. Right? Sorry, soundguy, these things don't turn down.

That's kind of rig you don't take to a gig. That's like museum exhibit stuff.

Yup. Those aged white ones are great. Rumor has it he got that guitar from Sylvain Sylvain of the NY Dolls. It makes a little sense considering Steve Jones stole every move, facial tick, and lick he knows from Johnny Thunders.

Nice, so I've basically got the China-equivalent of the above mentioned speakers...Which IMO are probably just as good sounding, & would probably be more dependable/lasting, maybe. I guess that would depend on how old they actually are, how well they've been treated & so on...

I just can't get over the fact almost all the gear I put up for sale this week, has sold basically all at once. Just boggles my simple little mind...

I saw a cool looking JCM800 head, that was actually a 4010 combo converted for sale. He had a new faceplate made for it, so the numbers/letters are right-side up. It's a bit pricey, but it looks to be in great shape....

Yeah but that's all that room in there. To me, I think that it's pretty glorious through the room sound.

That's what I think too, it's the camera's mic taking the top end off. I bet if you stuck a proper mic on one of those cabs, it'd be just plain awesome. I love the way he's getting the controlled feedback myself. To me, that's a big part of playing through an amp at volume, the interaction between the player & his gear...

Imagine blending a close mic or two with all that room sound on that rig. Jesus, my head would probably explode.

lol .... ok .... it doesn't sound that good but we all know it must sound good.

:laughings:

Sorry ..... I don't give a shit what it should sound like .... that clip does NOT sound killer.

Lol. I think it sounds good as-is. I wouldn't use that kind of roomy sound myself, but it still sounds good to me. Sounds like vintage classic rock guitar tone.

Steve Jones stole everything he could lay his hands on, both figuratively and literally! :D He was a noted tea-leaf (thief, in cockney rhyming slang) and probably nicked all of the Pistol's group gear to get the act off the ground! :D I always assumed he bought the Custom with one of the several advances they received.

Here's a pic of the 4010 I mentioned...It looks good, but it's probably a little too much $$$ for what it is...

To me, it sounds fucking amazing, because I know what an amp sounds like in a room. I think it sounds superb. You don't. I'm making realistic allowances for the quality of the recording based on my experience of what amps normally sound like under these recording conditions.

I think Sylvain actually gave it to him. That's the story I heard.

But yeah, Steve Jones supposedly stole a bunch of stuff from Rod Stewart's truck, or maybe it was The Faces or something? Whoever it was, he stole all of the Pistols' gear. There's no other way a broke 18 yr old street kid had the kind of money to buy all that gear he had. He had bad ass guitars.
