They all sounded very useable. My favorites are:

1] G12-65 L + Vintage 30 R

2] G12-65 L + Greenback R

3] Greenback L + Vintage 30 R

Hard to pick a favorite for me, but I suppose the 65 & GB first, then the 65 & V30 next. The 65's sound pretty damn good man, but really, all the tones you posted could be used in a mix, really easily......I'm listening on headphones right now, I'll give 'em another shot in the morning, with the monitors up so I can really hear 'em good......

Congrats dude, I think you've got yourself another great speaker combination....

Very hard for me to pick a favorite as well. But I think I prefer the first three in no particular order.

Guess I just prefer the 65. :D

I agree with you fellas. I really like the G12-65's in these clips - even with the G12T-75. The 65 + Greenback clip is definitely my favorite. When I first put those two together, I was like....whoa. My top 3 for now:

1) 65 + Greenback
2) 65 + V30
3) Greenback + V30

I already yanked the G12T-75's. So now the cab has G12-65's X-patterned with Greenbacks. Out in the room with the volume up, I think the cab really shines. I liked it before with the G12T-75/Greenback X-pattern. It had a well-rounded, very full-spectrum kind of sound. With the G12-65's, on the whole it's a little tighter and punchier in the low mids. More percussive. The low end seems more focused. Mids and highs seem mostly unchanged. I'm gonna be blasting it tonight at a punk rock jam, so we'll see how it goes live in a room with a band.

lol ..... for someone who "doesn't give a shit" you put more effort into this tonequest than anyone I know!!
:D:D

Yeah, stuff like this is fun and doesn't require any arguing at all. And in the end, I suppose, you'll come out with some nice tones!

Lol. I have a lot of free time. I'm just entertaining myself.
hey . it's pretty useful work man.

For example ...... I was surprised how different the V30 sounded. Sure ..... some of it may have been mic positioning but regardless it was clear that the V30 is a different beast.
pretty usable information and we only have it thanks to you.
Sure ..... there's sites that do that but I kinda trust you more than them.

I had a few listens through the monitors today, & I still like the 65-L & GB-R the best, especially in the mixes you posted. To me, the Greenback has a lot more "bite" than the other speakers, to be honest, I thought the V30 would have more. Could be mic positon, but who knows....Sounds good man, no matter what speaker you're using, you always get really good tones.....

BTW, I've had my little 1w Marshall for 2 weeks now, & I'm still lovin' it. I've done a little tube rolling with some NOS 12ax7's, but the differences in the tones are very little to be honest. The only tube I've swapped & like a little more is the Sylvania in V1, with everything else stock. It seems to smooth the top end just a hair, I thought the Mullard I have would won, but in the DSL, the Sylvania was best for me.....I'm gonna try to find some NOS and/or some CP power tubes for the little guy, for tube rolling, but more so in case one of 'em craps out, I'll have a replacement....I'm pretty much set on 12ax7's, need to get some for the power section......yeah, the power section of a 1w amp.....:D

I'll try to post some clips tonight when I get in from work, I have been recording the last few days, but really just fucking around like I always do.....BUT, I did write another song over the weekend, I just need to get off my ass & actually track/mix it.....I've got almost an album full of stuff I haven't finished......

Again, sounds good Greg!!!

Yup, that's the goal. I wanna be the drummer with the best fucking guitar tones on the planet. :D

Well that's awesome. Thanks. Yeah, you can trust teh gerg! :D

Like I said, this is fun for me and if it helps anyone else out, then great. I don't know why, but I'm fascinated by how speakers impact tone. I'd bet that many guitarists stress all day over string gauges and tube rolling while not even being able to tell you what speakers are in their cab.

The Vintage 30 is a different animal indeed. I've said all along that it's a freak. I didn't like them that much when I first got them, but I've since "learned" them and I really like them now. I don't think they mix well with many other speakers in the same cab though. I think they need to be paired with similarly "loud" speakers, or better yet, just leave them alone. A 4x12 full of V30s at full roar is a pretty righteous experience.

Thanks dude, looking forward to your clips.

I wanted to get into tube rolling a while back, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. The differences are just not that significant to me. And with this JVM410, there's 9 tubes in that motherfucker. I'm not fucking with all that. I did try out some various regular production pre amp tubes in the 900 MkIII. I couldn't tell which ones I liked best, but I did learn that I do not like JJ tubes. I think I left a Tung-Sol in V1, Raytheon Black Plate in V2, and an Electro Harmonix in V3.

1)try setting up your amp to play clean no matter how hard you play. 2) since a guitar is a "midrange" instrument roll of the bottom around 100 using a high pass filter and boost the mids in the 200 to 1.6K range (use restraint...a little goes a long way) I generally roll the top end off around 2K give or take but you can ad some air by boosting the 5 to 16K range to taste. I also find that a little delay 200 to 300 ms mixed in very low..almost subliminal will add a since touch of body and depth. These are the same settings I use when mixing live and to date have had very good luck.

Hey...at least he didn't tell you do also add some reverb... ;)

Makes me feel like I'm not doing enough with my guitar tracks when I just put up a mic and dial in the tone at the amp. :D

Man I just roll off some of the highs above 12k and roll off the non essential low freq stuff below 100hz.

Amp sims have that stupid ice pick frequency in the 13-15k area that needs to be notched out sometimes.

I don't think anything more is nessesary. Dial it in at the amp right and corrective eq isn't needed. Effects like delay and such should be in stomp box form in front of the amp.

OK, gonna bump this thread back to the top, new tone for me, going for the EVH thing, I think I'm closer now.....

I put a Duncan Custom Custom in my Ibanez, & it seems to work fairly well....I'm not interested in getting the exact tone, because I won't anyway, I think it's close, but wanna know what you guys think....

Signal chain is:
Ibanez RG350DX w/Custom Custom in bridge > SD-1 (clean-ish boost, but not on for the whole clip) > DSL-1 H > V30 (ISO cab) > '57 > Reaper

The fx were added in the daw ('verb, phase & delay), but there's no eq at all, not even a high/low pass filter.....

Please forgive the shitty playing, I just threw a drum loop in the daw & hit record....

Lemme know what you guys think.......

I think at times you kind of crept a little bit into EVH tone territory there, but mostly it just sounded like an 80's cock-rock tone to me. I think what it misses from vintage EVH is the bite and overall depth and roundness (brownness) of the sound. Eddie's sound was clearly super loud amp, and he almost sounded like he was playing through single coils. I'm not a big fan of VH, but I was always amazed at how much bite and clarity he got out of a humbucker + cranked amp. But whatever, your clip sounds great.

what are your amp settings?
