The New Tone Thread

I'm gonna guess the first is the Mark V because it sounds like a Mark V to me, and the second half is the pedal direct because it actually sounds direct.

Regardless of whether I'm right or not, I like the first half tone better.
yep ..... I agree

Y' know ...... I'm just gonna come clean.
The first one is the pedal.

The second shitty sounding one is the Mark V.

However ..... I was using it on its 10 watt setting, which I've never used.
I was thinking I could crank it at 10 watts and get a power tube-like distortion.

But it was late and even at 10 watts it was loud as shit!
So I had the master down to about 9 'O' clock and the masters on those channels down too.

MAN that's a fizzy sounding piece of crap set like that.

Next week when I get a chance I do still need to disable the master volume and try that ..... I'll see if it's better with no master volume and the channels master cranked to 10.
That might sound good but this was shockingly terrible.

However the pedal sounds surprisingly decent.

Lol. Wow. I just now noticed you amended that last post to reveal the answers. Two things - that amp does sound like ass turned down, and that pedal sounds good but nothing like a "Hendrix sound".

I played on some of the cheapest guitars I have ever seen today both from a company called Chord which I can find out next to fuck all information about. I think they're Chinese.

First was a 335 clone which was 220 quid - didn't bother plugging it in but it actually felt alright, the fret ends were bound, the neck was straight and everything appeared lined up properly. Tuners, knobs and switches all seemed to work OK. No notes were significantly grounding out on the upper frets as I was playing.

Second was a SG clone. Now this was quite shit. It was 110 quid. Looked, at a glance like an SG. Tuners were shit and were even slightly mismatched, pickup surrounds were really shitty cheap plastic, notes grounding out everywhere, buzzy as fuck at the nut. The nut was a shitty piece of white plastic and there was some chipping in the finish at the sides of the neck where the nut slot had been cut out. Couldn't get it to stay in tune for more than a couple of licks. All the knobs spun really freely and just felt loose and crap.

So, whereas the 335 was a useable lump you could set up properly and stick nice bits on the SG was firewood... at best.

The shop was interesting though, tiny place, just sold guitars, guitar bits, music boxes and coffee. I was on my way back from a meeting when I spotted the place and fancied a coffee, so I just had a coffee and played some shit guitars for 20 minutes. Before buying a nice pick and some bass strings.

Where the fuck is minerman anyway?

Minerman, roll call.

I was thinking about this the other day - I thought that metal track I posted would have been his cup of tea, I wanted to see what he thought. I've just popped him a quick email.

You sure it wasn't Cort?

No, it was actually Chord. I thought it was Cort too when I first saw them in the window. Cort are fairly standard decent quality Chinese Bollocks most of the time aren't they.

They looked similar to Stagg stuff.

I've seen a few Cort LP clones that weren't half bad. Never heard of Chord though.

No, I hadn't either and trying to find info on the "Chord" brand when you're looking for guitars is pretty tricky! They're among the cheapest electric guitars I've ever seen new (aside from 3/4 and 1/2 size strat copies for kids)

Lol. - that amp does sound like ass turned down, .
I know ...... I'm actually bothered by how crappy it sounded ..... maybe something's wrong with it.

If someone wanted it I think I'd sell it.
It sounded decnt in the room .... maybe I have a bad mic?

I'ma have to do some digging next week .... I'll let ya'll know what I figure out.

To be fair, most amps sound pretty crappy turned down.
lol ..... not that bad though.
Hell ..... I've gotten better sound outta my Valve Jr.

But .... it didn't sound like that in the room .... I was fully expecting it to blow the pedal away in the recording .... I think I may have a bad mic ..... or cable .... or preamp ..... perhaps I was holding my tongue wrong.

Bubba - sounds good to me. Funnily & illogically I love the Pixies & dislike FB!
Lt Bob - take me back to the Early 70s Santana - 2nd sounds a little buzzier than the 1st when it's on lower notes and I really couldn't say anything beyond that. Cool playing though.

Good morrow to you, tone threaders! Just a quick one from me. This mix is a bit half-baked to tell you the truth - not happy with the vocals as yet and there are some bits of guitar to add. The reason I've posted it is because I recorded some of the guitars with the emulated out of my Marshall JVM. The solo 2/3 of the way through is D.I.d

What do you think? It's a cover of a Frank Black song (ex of the Pixies).

lead guitar tone sounds good to me. I've heard recordings of miced tube amps that don't sound as good.

Lt Bob....
The first clip was not horrible tone...just a little fizzy. On the second clip it started out bad on the low strings but in the higher register it sounded great. This ground has already been covered so I really just wanted to tell you I thought your playing was very good on this.

thank you sir ..... yeah, I'm not sure what was going on with the amp .... once I get thru the gigs I'll try to figure it out next week

Cheers, I'll get on with writing it and see if Greg's got any mixing tips. Should have this together then by next weekend
