The loudness jump from 1 to 2 is there but it doesn't do anything to help the tone IMO. 3 is knocking on the door of getting good. 4 and 5 is where the goodness starts in these clips.
Plug in, I'm just using Reagate to clear some noise off a track.Gates aren't really designed for fade outs. That's not where they do their best work. Are you using a plug-in gate or a real gate?D
I think the organ bits sound fine, but they're low in the mix, so that might help it sound fine. Sounds like a typical organ sound to me, so nothing wrong with that. I'm no organ aficionado so I can't tell how good or bad it really is.
I'm cheating. This isn't about guitar tone but, rather, organ tone.
THe link is to a long and not very melodic song by long term collaboration of mine - The Newlings.
It was originally a folky tune. I fooled around and added a drum track and an organ track plus asked Eric to add some more rock guitar tracks.
The drums are BIAB again and none to adventurous at all.
The organ is BIAB as well.
It's a "RealPlayer" file meaning it's made up of snippets of wav files played by a real organist but reassembled to suit the tempo, chords and structure of the song.
It WAS a stereo organ part but the left hand was distracting in it's bass notes as they confused my head about the bass guitar notes.
I made the stereo organ mono & shot it up the middle.
Have a skip through and let me know if the organ sounds "convincing" please.
I've marked where the organ is more obvious in the mix.
Haha nice Greg beats in there. There's still some work to be done here, but I think I have the bare bones of a good metal tone here - My playing not that tight yet 'cos its a fairly tricky riff and I've only just come up with it.
This was actually recorded at TV volume (and I'm not a deaf old lady either).

Cheers mate, were you on take 1 or take 2?Sounds pretty good Jdude, I agree you need to scoop the mids just a little & fatten up the low end a bit...I'm very impressed with your drum programming too man, leaps & bounds!!!
I recorded a couple clips yesterday, but listening to 'em this morning they sound like utter shit, so I'm gonna re-do 'em...
Here's take 2!

There's not that much different between them - the second lightly gainier one seems to have a bit more meat on the palm mutes without too much flub. Definitely don't want more gain now - I'm a pretty simple creature in that respect really.
This is still all at TV volume too which is quite a surprise - I normally record at much higher volume than this.
On the drums - I've got snare trash on everything except the kick which I've moved out onto its own and I flicked through the Leixcon until I tried tiled room which seems to fit but doesn't have that weird reverb triggering effect.
This is actually a really fun riff to play.
That one is better to me. A little more grit in it.
Do me a favor....record a mono DI of that and send it to me please. I wanna run it through my JCM 800 set for "metal" and see what it does to the mids.

Do you know how to template REAPER? I've got a drum sound I'm happy with and I'd like to have it set up as a standard template in reaper so I don't have to fuck about choosing each drum and reverb every time I do a new track.
OK, would I do this by just plugging straight into my interface and playing clean totally raw? without any effects or anything? (like if I was recording bass but without the reverbs and compression?) I've never recorded a raw DI track before.

It shouldn't clip. Are you using an instrument input?
For reference - here's my tone from my lead line through my Blackstar with no bass, drums or rhythm. We'll just have to assume that my pick attack and playing style is pretty constant.

---------- Update ----------
Yeah. I have it turned down as low as it will go. Its only just starting to clip - the halos on the focusrite were orange, not red! my bass stayed in the green at 1/2 way and I was picking pretty hard as you can probably tell.
