The New Tone Thread

If I can't do it with Reaper, which I can't for some reason, then I'm not in the mood to figure out why. I like yall's videos, but I have no need or desire to make my own.

My video just wouldn't import into Reaper either. But seeing as I had shot the fucking thing I thought I might as well work out how to overlay the music. Turns out Windows Movie Maker was already on my machine.

It says I need to activate movie maker, and I'm wary of allowing microsoft even more access to anything I do. I'm avoiding the Windows 10 update at all costs.

OK, so before we get too sidetracked making guitar-pornos for eachother - here's the first tone of my week off work now that I have stopped travelling around in the fucking styx.

Faster paced and lower gain than I'm used to. Couple of small errors in it 'cos its all single takes - I've not decided whether I'm gonna clear them up yet.

That's not too bad. I like the lower gain. The tone is still kind of woofy, like you mic'd too near the edge. It's not dark, it's not muddy, just kind of woofy. It could be the bass guitar tromping all over it too. Just for shits and grins, drop the bass some, and shelf down some lows, and shelf up the highs on the guitars. No cuts, no pass filters, use flat shelves and see what happens.

OK, Cheers, I'll give it a go. Shelf the bass as well as the guitars?

I did the Windows 10 update and it worked fine aside from me having to install new drivers for my old TonePort

No, leave the bass EQ alone. Just drop it back some. What I'm trying to do is have you get some separation between the church and state...err...bass and guitars. I'm thinking you have low end competing in the mix. Dark-ish guitar tones are fine if the bass isn't in the way. If this works, you'll know you can use a brighter mic placement and/or less muck in the bass.

JDOD, I think I slightly prefer the right hand guitar tone, albeit a little less fizzy. The left hand guitar has a bit of a honk to me (which is not a bad thing - it's a distinct tone) Is it a half-cocked wah? I just realised it must be, because you're using the wah properly, now. The earlier lead tone sounds good. :)

The second version is better balanced tonally, but the left guitar could come up a dB or two.:thumbs up:

OK... that's weird there's obviously something causing an odd effect 'cos both the guitars are exactly the same and there's no wah wah. The only thing I've added is reaverb on the third guitar for the lead licks.

Ah, I know what you mean - the bit where I am cocking about at the end? That's a phaser! I was thinking of writing something in there at some point but I actually quite like the sound of the cocking about.

Seriously? They sound totally different to me. Like the lefty's on a middle or out-of phase pickup compared to righty.

Yeah, they're both on the bridge pick up and I've not touched the amp or moved the mic - in fact I've not moved the mic since before I put the V30 in! The lead licks (3rd guitar) are on the neck pickup. Still no wah or anything though - and litterally all I did there was click the phaser - I didn't even check what settings it was on!

That's another thing you could tweak. Too much of the same guitar tone isn't usually a good thing when you're doing layers and multiple tracks and shit. Alter something between tracks. Use a different guitar, cut the gain, move the mic, tweak the amp, do something different from take to take. It matters.

Cool vid miner. You don't look half as sick as I was expecting.

Tone sounds great, seems to really want to slip into a real musical feedback whenever you let a chord ring out.

Do you think the Les Paul might end up for sale then?

Thanks Jdude, you guys don't notice it because you never saw me before I got sick, but I'm a lot smaller than I was before, especially in my upper body. My arms/shoulders used to be pretty big, & my legs have taken a big hit too. The only thing that stayed with me is my big gut...
Notice how baggy the arms/sleeves on my t-shirt is??? Before I got sick, my arms were pretty big, & they were fairly tight. Pretty much all the weight I've lost has been muscle...

On the feedback, once I get to a certain volume all my guitars do that, & yours should too...

Nope, not selling the LP dude, I'm keepin' it...:D

Aspect ratio miner dude! Everything seems a little thinner than it should be. except the sound. Nice work.;)

Thanks dude, I'm still figuring things out as this was kind of a test run....Thanks again man!!!

How come it sounds like crickets on standby?
Cool to see your dial MM.
I though things were tame volume wise until the 1st bit of feedback started in quiet spots.
I aslo needed to turn the vol into my headphones up because the missus had turned verything down during the day.
plenty loud and the tone after 3mins is full of teeth.
A good 1st demo vid MM &, again, good to see your dial.
Oh, the Epi SG I mentioned - seems the seller has done the flit. I offered to buy it & hard case + postage but he's not reponded for a week. C'est l'guerre!

Thanks Ray, the reason it's so quiet when on standby is I automated the volume of the tracks to try to kill the hiss, as it was quite apparent through the camera's mic. It was actually so bad if I hadn't done that, it would've killed the voice parts in the video...The guitar sounds are from the i5...I just automated the volume of each track so you'd only hear one at a time....Thanks again Ray!!!

That's a shame about the Epi, from what I read about those, they're just as good as a Gibby, just at a much lower price...

Hey good job miner!

Goddamn yall, you're gonna peer pressure me into learning video. I've managed to avoid it for so long.

The tones sound great. It's a little tubby, a little, but not bad at all. The bite and growl of the gain is good without being excessive when you lay into it. That guitar is a thing of beauty.

Just fix the aspect ratio of the vid and you're in good shape.

Thanks Greg, I thought if I stuck a vid up, you might do one.....It's not hard at all, & you can do almost everything in Reaper....The camera I used shoots MTS video, & I had to convert to MP4 or Reaper wouldn't even "see" the file. I'll write out a little tutorial thing about how I did it in a little while...

On the tone, the tubby-ness is probably due to I didn't really get the amp opened up where it needs to be, as the audio on the camera was clipped to hell. But, as long as my voice parts aren't clipped, it doesn't matter...The volume on the amp was on 3, which is pretty loud, but honestly, that amp doesn't really open up until it hits about 4-5 on the volume knob...I'll do better on the next one...:).Thanks again Greg....

Cool video miner, and even cooler tones. my mental image of you was somewhat like Al Jolson in the Jazz Singer, as if you'd just come up from the coalface. Hearing your accent's great as well. :D

Lol...Thanks Bubba, there's no denying I'm a hillbilly right down to my toes dude, especially my accent...:)
If I had a scanner I could post some pics you'd get a kick out of, as the only white part of me you can see are my eyeballs in some of 'em....Thanks again man!!!

That's a pain in the dick. You gonna be able to work out again in the future? Or is this likely to make you keel over?

We should try and get a few of us for a google-hangout with a beer at some point - although given the time difference that might involve the yanks having booze for breakfast!

You know, that's not something I'd considered before - all the songs I post are using a single guitar - usually with the same tone.

The last clip is best to my ears Jdude...Just curious, how wide do you have your guitars panned out??? The reason I'm asking is your drums sound wider than the guitars to me...If you don't have 'em out there already, pan 'em out to about 70% L/R...And if they are, you need to go into your EZD mixer & pan the oh's/amb tracks in a bit. I usually pan my oh's about 50% L/R at the most, & the amb about 10% more...I always try to make my guitars wider than the drums, including the oh/amb tracks, plus the panning of the toms...Lemme know what you've got on that...

This is one of your better sounding tracks to me man, it's starting to come together a little...
