The New Tone Thread

OK, so before we get too sidetracked making guitar-pornos for eachother - here's the first tone of my week off work now that I have stopped travelling around in the fucking styx.

Faster paced and lower gain than I'm used to. Couple of small errors in it 'cos its all single takes - I've not decided whether I'm gonna clear them up yet.

I actually like that tone quite a bit. Listening on consumer grade 5.1 speakers, I don't hear the woofiness. But my ears are all clogged up due to a cold, so I'm no authority on frequency balance at the moment (as if I'm such an authority any other time :) ). I like the tone itself though, its a little grungy but clear.

So I moved the Bassman out of the closet and into my (obnoxiously) large bedroom. The ceiling is slanted from 8' to at least 15'. The room is probably around 25' x 20'. I have the amp facing the direction of the larger ceiling height and near the middle of the room. Everything else is the same, including the rhythm track. I like this tone a whole lot better and it sounds more usable for what I do. It certainly sounds less boxy to me.

Minerman: Loved your video. You boys have thinking about adding some video to one of these clips. Sweet ax and good luck with it.

Everyone else, after years of reading this thread it's cool to see faces and hear the voices of all of you that, up until recently, were just screen names and avatars. Post them if you got them.

Bedroom Fool Test

Yeah I definitely don't hear anything boxy about that lead tone. Is that just an SG straight into a Bassman? Or is there a boost or overdrive in the chain? That's pretty screaming hot! It's got some nice overtones, almost a harmonic or feedback thing going on. I think it sounds awesome, I'd use that tone in a mix without hesitation.

I think he said he's hitting the front with one of those Jekyll and Hyde pedals.

I love it dude! The tones sound great, and that SG really is beautiful. It's great to put a face to the screen name :)

How big of a pain in the ass was it to create the captions for the amp settings? Was that basically just 10 instances of the "video processor" plugin, each with a different line of text? Or is there a way to put line breaks in?

As for the aspect ratio thing, that might be in your settings when you render the video. If it looked normal in the video window while you were editing the project, then it's probably some setting in the render options. Video in Reaper isn't exactly easy, and just like you I spent a lot of time just learning the ins and outs of it. I think this is great for a first go-around.

The captions used one instance each, IE: the beginning "Gibson SG" was one instance, & everything else was another (the amp setting text was one instance, you just have to play with it to get the numbers to line up in a list). IIRC, it was like 3, maybe 4 for the text, but you also have to use one instance for the fade in/out. You just have to play with it to get the size you want, along with where it will be on the screen. I tried to use different colors, maybe I'm missing something, but couldn't figure that out...

On the aspect ratio, it's the camera, as it had the blocks on the side. I did a little test thing today with a different aspect ratio, & they're still there, just on the top/bottom now, although not as bad, they're still there. I may not be able to get rid of that with the camera I'm using, as I've looked all morning without much success. I'll probably just have to deal with it, but I'll have those black blocks on top/bottom next time...

There is a learning curve, but it's really not too bad, you just have to dig in & figure it out...I'm gonna do another one maybe today, & it should be better IMO...Thanks dude!!!

Cheers Tad, I listen on my normal stereo too as its what happens to be connected to my TV and computer. My process tends to be shit tracking headphones, quality reference headphones, stereo and then whatever earbuds I have connected to my phone. I find good mixes sound decent on any crap - even iPad speakers.

Greg,

Here's a sample of the rhythm guitar tone - fuck me this song sounds weird with the parts in isolation - the lead part barely sounds like music - see if you can pick up anything specific that's ugly - it sounds pretty ugly on its own.View attachment rhy G Sample.mp3

I had that aspect ratio thing with my video too but YouTube offered to correct it for me automatically - that was quite nice :)

I think I'm gonna listen to your clip again now miner just to hear your accent! I might send you a script so you can record me bedtime stories!

I played one of these last week and its everything I could ever want in an amp. all 3 channels sounded great and the attenuator worked fine. ampegs rule if you can find a good one.

Well I got it cleaned up, in my opinion, I got it tighter and brighter, but there's not much to go on there. Gimme something with some chords, some variety.

EDIT: HR won't let me upload a 30MB .WAV!

Email it to me. I'll play with it later.

I was cahtting with only other bloke at work today. he's only in every second Wednesday and has a nice collection of guitars so we have a chatter about this'n'that. As a sideline he used to restore guitars in the UK and sell them on, from old junkers to nice axes that he managed to acquire at reasonable prices or less.
He show me some snaps today of the room he had the gear in before moving to Oz - a really cool Hofner guitar from the late 60s, complete with original hard case and Selmer strap, a Fender or 2, some Squires, an Emperador Hummingbird copy acoustic, a bass amp from the 60s that was often rebadged Selmer which was given to him by an 80 year old ex session muso and, sitting happily & unheralded, in the middle a Gibson SG - cherry red and about 20 years old that he'd not mentioned previously. He said, "yeah, that's a nice guitar" and left it at that. He also has a bass that looked somewhat like a Music Man bass from about 72 that he said was custom built by a luthier. Funnily enough, amongst all that stuff he had a fairly big Park that he'd picked up for beans - that was a short lived, thankfully, experiment by Marshall.

JDOD, nice track of EZ Drummer for a 1st go.
Good luck with it - I look forward to hearing how it develops within your music.

Go listen to my new original in the Clinic, fuckers and fuckettes.

I posted it here when I was still working on the guitar parts, which is the only reason I'm telling you's to go listen to it. It's finished now.

Or don't. Either way.

It sounds real good on my Sony Walkman, but only one headphone works and the batteries are low so the whole thing plays slow. Cool song. Good mix. It could use another verse, maybe in Japanese, maybe Russian, but the chorus has too much chorus. I'd do it differently.

HAHA! Holy fuck. I was half way through that before I realized it wasn't serious. I was like, who the fuck is this? LOL!

That was funny. :D

:thumbs up::drunk: haha, excellent.

Greg, you're tone sculpting made a huge difference to my mix. Really pleased with it now.

Been surfing a lot this week so not got as much playing done as I'd like but I've a really odd song choice (for me) coming up!

RAMI - there's probably next to fuck all I could do to critique one of your mixes.
