I've found a Ceritatone 800 clone that the guy says he's willing to trade on. He says he's wanting a channel switching amp, so I'm gonna ask if he'd be interested in my DSL, maybe...Straight up, he's wanting $1100 for the amp, but to me, that's a little high, as I originally paid $850 for the Chupa...

Dude, you are gassing hard for an 800. :D

Listen, I'm serious, do not make that trade. I LOVE JCM 800s with every fiber of my being, but I'm really not feeling that you're gonna be totally happy with an 800. I don't know why, they're killer, but everything I hear from you doesn't make me think "he really needs a JCM 800".

Now I could be wrong because everyone should love the JCM 800, but I know them pretty well, and it just doesn't seem like the right amp for you IMO. I think your Chupa was perfectly suited for you. You do great with the DSL. The 800 is not like either of those amps. It's an angry, unrefined beast that really wants to be very loud.

This is just my opinion knowing the amp and knowing you. I hope you can prove me wrong, but I'd hate to see you unhappy with such an expensive amp.

I agree with teh gerg ( not much of a surprise there) .... WAY too much bass .... otherwise nice toans and playing.

Thanks Bob, I always seem to struggle with the low-end in my mixes, always have....

Sorry for the delay in my posts, for some reason HR is acting up on my end...

I know the 800 is an iconic amp, & lots of albums I like have 'em on there. But, most of those tones had help from a pedal or the amp was modded, etc....So, I'm still debating about it...

My main concern is getting the Chupa home, but that's pretty much a done-deal, unless something terrible & unforeseen happens between now & then, but I've got my fingers crossed anyway....lol

You know, I was looking at Orange amps right before I got the Chupa (the OR15 in particular), so I may see what I can find out about those amps. I know they're supposed to have a "British" thing, but they're darker than a Marshall too. That might work good, a gained-up Orange with my Marshall-y tones...I'm not sure I wanna go the low-watt route again though, so I'm gonna go dig a little & see what all I can find out about some other options...

Fuck, I'm GAS-in' for all kinds of shit over here...:laughings:.

I'm sure you could make an 800 be all it can be, but in it's natural state I just don't think you'd be in love with it.

Investigate the Orange TH30. Besides the uber-expensive Rockerverbs, those are probably my favorite Orange amps. Do you remember that Green one I had a while back? That was a TH30. Pretty cool amp.

Yeah dude, I'd be pretty disappointed if I dropped that kinda coin on something, & didn't totally love it...Still debating....

That's weird, I was just looking at the TH30's...:D.Those amps have EL34's in 'em, while a lot of other amps in the same wattage range seem to all use EL84's. I really don't have much experience with EL84's... My nephew (the preacher) has a Carvin V3 mini amp that uses EL84's. It does sound good, but again I don't have much experience with EL84 amps...

Looking at the newer TH30's they've got EL84's...The one I was referring to was an older amp...my bad....

For recording maybe an amp like that is what I'm after to compliment my other gear, I dunno....Just looking around for now, as if/when this happens, will be a while down the road anyway....

TH30s have four EL84s. They're similar to EL34s, but lower wattage. I think each EL84 is a 9w max dissipation, so four of them is good for about 36 watts. The TH30 can also be switched to 15w, and then half power on top of that, so it can go down to 7w. They sound good. I really like to crank their clean channel. Great breakup on that channel.

Yeah, I edited my last post, but I swear I saw a 30w Orange amp that had EL34's in it somewhere. I do know it was used though...

If I were to go that direction, I might wanna go with the OR15 as it's got seperate bass/mid/treble for the tonestack, where the TH30 only has a single tone knob...I'm sure both would be great though, I'm checking out some demos online right now...:D.

I tried out a Peavey Valve King that had EL84s in it I think. Sounded good but I remember it sounding a bit on the harsh side, a bit too sharp and cutting... I ended up going for a much darker amp in the end.

I played through a friends V30 (amp, not speaker) loaded with EL34s. I really want to try the 6L6 version cos it could be my perfect amp.

a VERY spiky sounding amp ..... I can't stand them.
Ice pick treble is their forte.

But NOT because of the EL84s ..... that's what they use in Vox AC30's and 15's .... it's what's in a lot of Orange amps.
My Mesa Blue Angel is anything BUT spiky and it has 4 EL84s (and 2 6v6s) and is very smooth and bluesy ...

So EL84s are great but Peavey has become a front for Chinese amps these days and that Valve King isn't a very good amp.

Went looking for that particular amp I'd mentioned, it was an Orange Rocker 30, my bad. These amps have been discontinued, replaced by the TH30 from what I can find online...

+1 Bob, no experience with the Peavey amp mentioned, but the little Carvin V3 my nephew has uses EL84's & isn't spiky sounding at all, in fact what time I've spent with it, it's exactly the opposite of that IMO...

Shame, I still have a soft spot for my old Peavey. The spec sheet for the valve king seemed too good too be true at the price it was... Turns out it was too good to be true.

Lou: Damn dude, I forgot to thank you for listening/commenting on the clip I posted....Yep, I'm still hangin' in here dude, thanks again...:).

For those of you who don't know, Lou here is the one who started the original tone thread....:guitar:

Don't give me too much credit. I was just trying to copy Ronno's tone. It took everyone to make it run like it has. Still the best thread even on version two. I have kept up - read it all - just don't comment much as I have been on an extended sabbatical from playing. Hopefully that will change soon.

Keep playin' and postin'...

I think you just made me realize that I might not have thanked him either for my last clip. This thread goes by so quick sometimes, that I read posts totally intending to respond to them, and then get caught up in the all the following posts.

Thanx Sky...and anyone else I might have inadvertently ignored.

You wekkom to both of you but no worries (and you did RAMI) This thread does indeed move like a freight train sometimes. I've checked in 15 pages down. "Oh fuck. Got some catching up to do."

It's all good.

Aw hell man, you're the daddy of the tone thread!!!! Post up some clips when you can dude...IMO, best thread on the 'net...

It's easy to overlook someone because of the way this thing moves sometimes. It'll be quiet for a day or two, then they're be like 10 pages pop up...

First world GAS problem:

Looking for amps online and not finding anything because you already have the amps you want. :laughings:

Finding a 73 Super Lead or late 70s JMP 2203 isn't hard, but the only things I'm finding so far are way overpriced or modded.

I'm starting to lean back towards building my own clone.

Hey Greg - what do you think of these listings and prices? Look especially at the last one, 66/67 JTM50.

Mark's Guitar Loft ~ amps

This guy is local. Been selling high end and vintage stuff for years. I have my own thoughts but I'd like yours before I share. Check his guitar offerings as well.

Thanx.
