Sounds like Kashmir.

:laughings:

Who said that? Must be that oddball scale - can't remember the name of it. Lifeson used it on a bunch of stuff. It sounds good and well-produced like all yer stuff.

Hey Coalminer. Hillbilly hootenanny around the still down in the holler? Sounds good, man.

Hey fuckers and fuckettes.

Haven't been around for a few days. Christ, I think there are about 12 new pages since I was last here. Had to go back and try to catch up. I probably missed a few posts, but I caught JDOD's video (very cool, and very great playing), Bubba's sound is coming together wonderfully, Ray, Miner, everyone really has put up some good stuff.

Fat Jazzy made me spit out my fucking tea. Can this dude be any more "white". He needs to change his name to Whitey McWhiteness. :D

Greg's tone are always inspirational as all fuck.

Probably missed a few, but I did try to catch up.

Here's what I'm working on. I posted this a few weeks ago before I put real drums on it. Now it's finished except for the vocals. And I'm pretty sure it doesn't sound like Kashmir any more. I hope not anyway. Let me know especially how things sound starting at around 2:30, I think it is...the softer part.

Cheers RAMI, I'd just got out of the sea so my hands were freezing. Took me ages to get a passable take and I still fucked it up a bit!

Hehe...Yeah, no I changed it. I can see how it did sound Kashmir-ish before. The verse line that is now a descending line was a climbing line and did resemble it a bit. I'm pretty sure it doesn't sound anything like it any more.

Just a side note on the track I posted. This has zero to do with the (guitar) tone thread, but it's not worth posting in the drum section just to share this.

Anyway, I finished tracking the drums and I was all happy with myself. Then, I realized that I forgot to plug-in my bottom snare mic. Shit! So, rather than re-track, I went to the last tune that I recorded before this, took a sample of my bottom snare mic from that tune, and pasted it on every snare hit for this tune.

Just wanted to share that little bit of trivia. It was tedious, but worth doing.

Ok, here's a clip (it's actually a song minus the vocals) & I'm curious to what you guys think about it overall. Of course the guitars are in question, but everything else too...I'm trying to get this one finished up so I can move onto the next one...

CH 3-25-'16

I forgot to cut the silence at the beginning (it's about 5 seconds now, should be like 1-2), in time I'll fix that, so overlook that...

I'm a big fan of southern rock and I like this tune. My only suggestion is that it sounds too dry. Some well tuned reverb would really open things up. A sound somewhere in between "Hold On Loosely" and "Chain Lightning" is what I think you should shoot for. YMMV

Dark Tone Tower

This is the last part of a tone test I did earlier this arvo.
I used a keyboard & found the highest pitch sound - a cheese based string patch (string cheese).
I used the Focusrite Pre then a Behringer MIC100 then a Presonus Blue Tube, (the latter two patched to the line ins of the Focusrite) all were set at noon. I then redid the Focusrite Pre at 3pm so the levels were a better match - though things were getting noisy up there.
Attached are the freq chart from WAVREPAIR. I used it as the Reaper ones don't have the same range and it does a summative graph of any section selected so I selected the last note each time.
1st is the dark gtr, next to it is the Behringer Mic100 @ noon
next row is Focusrite at 3pm with the same at noon beside it
Last row is the Presonus Blue Tube @ noon.
Click on the pic to see a clearer version.

As demonstrated in the excellent video a few days ago - the Freq charts are unreliable to say the least.
Any thoughts other than turning the Focusrite pre up to max?

Minerman - that's pretty flash man. I don't dislike anything.
RAMI, that bass note pop at 1.50 is unusual - I waited for it to happen again.
Everything sounds great & the grittier tone at 3.05 was well placed to avoid politeness taking over - that is things needed an UP right there & you UPPED it.
Cool stuff gents.

Thanks dude, I'm assuming you're referring to the guitars & this actually has reverb on it, but I'm always cautious (probably overly) that I don't have too much. Maybe I need to look at the send levels...

Thanks again man!!!

Thanks Ray!!!

On the interface thing, I dunno man, I've came to the conclusion the freq graphs don't help, so I'm actually stumped. Sorry I've not been much help, but I honestly don't know anything to suggest here Ray...

LOVE the slide playing :D

only nit really is i'm not a fan of that repeating lead guitar melody line, its a tad repetitive, could do with some expression, like vibrato ... all the other chops are kewl :D

Miner, that was really good. Looking forward to having some decent drums myself next week!
Nothing really wrong with that mate, it's just the lead guitar sounds a little too dry.. Maybe a touch more reverb and vibrato or bend up to one of the notes or something to make it a bit more lively.

Ray, try installing the free demo of EZDrummer 2

Haha nice vid man. The tone sounded kinda squashed, like the power section or speaker wasn't working hard enough. It looked like you were home at the apartment, so I understand not being able to just crank it up. Nice playing though, and it's good to put a face to the name...er, initials...or whatever :D
Tad, I've just had a thought. When I put that together I mixed the audio from the camera up a little to make sure it was in synch. I left it in the mix a little which in hindsight was probably a shit idea.

Incidentally. I just drove up the road by Robert Plant's farm. No idea where it is exactly, could be anywhere in this countryside, can see why he likes it here though.

I just saw the solo vid JDOD.
Comfy chair and the playing was just fine - not in style for you - or me but a good exercise anyway. I have only played two lead solos that survived to be listened to by other folk and they were slow, mapped out and involved no melody that could be heard by a human ear.

I remember you mentioning a Fender amp once upon a time here too. What would be your pick if you were to buy a Fender amp Greg???

I really like Fender amps when they can be run up loud into breakup. I have very very little use for clean tones. Even my surfpunkabilly stuff is like a pushed clean, so the pristine cleans of a Fender are not anything I'm really interested in. Having said that, probably a Twin or Super. Something loud that will get gnarly. Maybe a Bassman. If I were to go this route, I'd probably like to try to buy or build one as a clone head unit only. I don't want any fucking combos.

I'll catch up on you guys' stuff as the day goes on. I was out all day yesterday and missed a lot of stuff. I had to help my dad-in-law move, then I had band practice last night. Ugh. Long day.

I think it all sounds good to me. I'd like the guitars a little more out front, but the tones seem to be just about right for the song. The softer part is pretty good, but it basically seems like the same hot tone just just turned down. I think actually going a little cleaner there would be a better choice.

This is really good to me, but I think the toms and bass are way too out front. The leads are very well done. They're sitting in the mix nicely, but they can come up some IMO. That's some tasteful playing. Good leads without being over the top flash wankery. Very smooth. I'm in awe of all of you dudes that play way better than I ever could and make it musical.

Thanks dude, a buddy of mine (bass player in the first band I was in) got me into slide when I was about 16 & it stuck. I like playing slide a lot...

On the little melody line, vocals go over that in a couple parts, so I'm gonna leave it as-is until I get the vocals tracked, then if it clashes, I may change it up, or drop it altogether...Thanks again dude...

Thanks Jdude...I metioned this to Ocnor last night, but as far as the mix, there is reverb on everything, maybe I need to raise the send levels on a couple/few tracks...BTW, there's a lot of fx on some of the guitars in that song too, dunno if you guys noticed 'em or not, but they're quite heavy in places...Thanks again Jdude....

I remember you wanting to build a clone now...That would be a cool project, as you could tweak the circuit however you wanted. And I'm sure you could do it because you're pretty knowledgeable about stuff like that...

I've found a Ceritatone 800 clone that the guy says he's willing to trade on. He says he's wanting a channel switching amp, so I'm gonna ask if he'd be interested in my DSL, maybe...Straight up, he's wanting $1100 for the amp, but to me, that's a little high, as I originally paid $850 for the Chupa...

I'll catch up on you guys' stuff as the day goes on. I was out all day yesterday and missed a lot of stuff. I had to help my dad-in-law move, then I had band practice last night. Ugh. Long day.

I figured you were busy Greg, because you're usually around here most of the time...I thought you might've had a gig last night...no biggie on my clip dude...

You posted this while I was typing my last post...:D

Thanks man, I'll have a look at the levels on everything, but especially the bass/toms. Just a little nudge via automation should make the guitar leads stick out a little more...

On the leads, I feel honored man, thanks!!! That's about as flashy, wanky as I get, simply because I can't play any better. I've mentioned this lotsa times, but I'm really a blues-based guitar player, period. What I play is really very, very simple...Thanks again dude....

I agree with teh gerg ( not much of a surprise there) .... WAY too much bass .... otherwise nice toans and playing.
