The New Tone Thread

Just starting up the amp with the V30 in it. This could be an interesting half hour - I just got it installed then I had to get in the sea. So now I have freezing hands and soft skin.

One thing that I did notice when installing it is that the V30 is a shit load heavier than the Rocket 50. The magnet is much larger in diameter and also much thicker. Don't know if this is the primary factor when considering tone - but its interesting nevertheless.

They can take several months to really settle in. Even with a lot of play. But once they do.....

I'm just warning you - don't make any quick judgements on it until you've really broken it in.

^ This Jdude, when I got my first V30, I didn't like it at all. It came in an Orange 1x12, & I honestly thought it sounded like shit. I ended up trading that speaker to Greg for an 8ohm version that he'd pummeled with 100w amps for quite a while. I could immediately tell a huge difference between that one, & my original which hadn't been broken in. This was back in my 1w DSL days, so who knows how long it would have taken to break that thing in with that little amp...

Almost the same thing with my G12H, but I've had it for about 18 months now, & it's been broken in for quite a while, but I'm not using 1w amps anymore either...

Something else to consider is the size of the cab too dude. I know the combo is all you've got, but judge the sound by what you get recorded, not what's in the room...First time I played through my 1x12 V30, I was really disappointed, I thought it was supposed to be the holy grail of speakers. The V30 is a good speaker, & it's pretty easy to mic (it's not real picky like some are finding the sweet spot), but from my experience, you'll either love it or hate it at first. I hated mine, but have grown to appreciate it because it's a different flavor...Just sayin'....

Rami: Nice guitars dude, I almost bought an SG with the flat satin finish like yours, but figured if I'm gonna spend any amount on a guitar, I might as well have the finish I really like, so I got the heritage cherry nitro....

Yeah. I went for a surf. Was good too, bit small but a lovely evening.

Just recorded a quick track with the V30. Massive difference. It's a big improvement that just highlights how shit the Rocket 50 actually is.

It's also louder, I had headphones on when recording so couldn't hear it the room, but the recorded waveform in Reaper was just bigger.

Trade ya! :D

Actually, my guitar looks worse in the picture than it does in person. It is a pretty nice satin finish. I just have something about Cherry Red SG's.

The V30 is a professional grade top-of-the-line speaker. The Rocket 50 is budget stuff. Magnets and weights do make a huge difference, but they're not the only difference. Greenbacks are pretty lightweight and sound awesome. They just don't handle much power.

V30s are a 100db speaker. For guitar specific speakers, watt-for-watt they're one of the loudest there is.

Hell dude, I haven't even got to see mine yet...lol...

My LP has the same kind of finish your SG does Rami...When I first got it, I wasn't impressed, but realized the nitro finish was something completely different than what I'd bought....

I almost got my SG in black, but the cherry just looks better to me....

JDOD: Greg's right man, the V30 is a definite upgrade from what you had. While I still have 2 of 'em, they're my least recorded speakers. I'm a big fan of the Greenback & '65's, although the G12H has been getting a lot of attention the last little while...

I love my V30s now that they're broken in.

My Gregburst is a satin finish silverburst. I love silverburst Les Pauls, but on the SG it's just meh because it's satin. If it were glossy then maybe I'd like it better. Non of it has anything to do with how it sounds or plays, but it just looks cheap and unfinished, so I'm gonna paint it. White SGs are hard to find, and when I do they're expensive as fuck, so I'll make my own.

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, SG's should only come in 2 colors, cherry red or white. I'm not saying white just because Greg's going to paint his white. I think the first electric guitar I ever saw in person was my cousin's white SG, and Glen Buxton, Alice Cooper's guitar player in the original band, had a white SG, too. So, cherry or white. That's it. :)

Look at that thing. It's beautiful. 3 humbuckers on that motherfucker.

Yeah, that's ok. Black is black, you can't go wrong. But that thing still looks like it wants to be dark red. :D

Haha, my Angus is so deep dark red it looks black sometimes.

And that's ANGUS. I said Angus. AnGus.

That's kinda how I feel about my LP dude, but it plays, sounds, & feels great, so it ain't goin' nowhere. The LP was my first "real" Gibson after years of not even playing, & that guitar always reminds me of my Dad. I got it about a week or so before he passed away, so it's got sentimental value too...

I was actually torn between which p'ups to get more than the finish/color of the SG, I saw a couple/few blue colored models, but they were way more expensive than what I wanted to spend...

Rami: That is a beautiful guitar man, no doubt. Very nice!!!

I've got a couple wall hangers for my guitars, but now the collection is growing, & I've got more guitars than hangers. I've been looking at some different options, & while this shit is expensive, I think it the black shit in the 2nd pic looks great:

They've got a few different styles/types to choose from, but again, IMO this shit is expensive...

I don't post here too often but here's my '78 "The SG".. I bought around 2001 for $200 from a dying junkie dude. It has a cracked headstock from when some jackass (:o) chucked it down a slide at a warehouse show. Fixed it myself with Gorilla Glue and a C-clamp.

It hasn't been in heavy rotation for a few years. These pics are from when I tried to sell it on craigslist for $400 a couple years ago. My inbox got flooded so fast that I chickened out and ended up keeping it.

Nice, Flat.

Ok, I'm beginning to open my mind. A wood grain SG is nice, too. :D

Miner, that picture makes my mouth water.

I've got maybe 4 or 5 String Swing hangers in oak that I'm not using. Let me know if you'd want them, Miner. I ditched the wall hangers and went with a Hercules 5-guitar floor rack that I expanded to hold 7 guitars. The hangers are nice to save floor space, but I think that I like the floor rack better. A little easier access, and my walls are largely occupied with acoustic treatment. So I probably won't be returning to the wall hangers. They're just gathering dust in my basement storage room right now.
