The New Tone Thread

In that video I uploaded in the drum section, you'll notice that I hit my sticks together once before I start playing. That was so I can sync the video with the audio that I recorded. I recorded the audio the same way I'd record a drum track for one of my songs. Then, I just muted the sound from my camera and synced them up.

It is, indeed. I like it a whole lot. It gets the most use out of all of my amps. It's just good at almost everything. The only thing that it's not good at is being a Marshall. The Custom channel is based off of a Bassman, so there is a hint of Marshall low-mids in there, but it just doesn't have the balls to be cranked all the way up and still hold together. The sweet spot for both the Custom and Vintage channels is about 4.5 on the volume knobs. Anything above that and they start breaking up in unpleasant ways. It does seem to be getting some weird preamp tube microphonic feedback though. There's a strange rattle it has, and it starts producing atonal overtones at extreme volume settings. Could be my room, or where I have it located. I might try some of those tube dampeners that Eurotubes sells, just as an experiment though.

In Reaper, press the Insert key on your keyboard (or go to Insert->Media File...) and navigate to your video file. That'll create a track from your video file. There is a codec to download (I Googled, downloaded and installed a program called VLC, which installs some video codecs that allow Reaper to magically be able to play videos). At first you'll only see the audio track for your video. In Reaper, go to View->Video Window and that'll show you the video portion of the video file in a viewer window.

HA! That is awesome. I never tried opening a video in Reaper. I just did it. That's amazing. I have a feeling it will make editing a video so much easier now, considering I know how to work with Reaper. The only thing I noticed is that muting the video track also makes the screen go black. I had to just turn down the volume all the way.

Yes, exactly the same here. I used a hand clap for this one. It's amazing how even the SM57 on the Marshall cabinet even picked up the clap enough to align the files all together. The day I got the camera, I did a test video with my e-kit and used the sticks to do the same thing. The world will never see that video though :) Nobody has anything to gain from watching me almost drool on myself as I struggle to keep a basic beat.

I did the exact same thing! I muted the video track and it took a while to figure out that I should've just turned the fader down instead.

I get the impression that Reaper doesn't support many fancy things with video, but like you say, the familiarity with it will help out with at least some relatively basic video projects. Basic is all I have in me at this point!

I've got an older blackface reissue Deluxe. Like yours, it's my most used amp. The features on the silverface reissue sound interesting--the revoiced channel 1 and the option of spring reverb on both channels. I'm on a hiatus from buying more gear but if that changes, I've got my sights on that silverface Princeton. As is known around these parts, I'm a fan of small amps. ;)

I'm surprised to hear that pushing the amp sounds unmusical. Check the bias? 4-5 is a good starting point for edge of breakup on mine but it's happiest from 7 or 8 all the way up to dimed. Noisy as hell.

Awesome guitar, Miner. Can't believe you've done it already - saying that. A new SG is £999 in the UK which is probably about $1300. So its not something you do on a whim.

RAMI - I couldn't see the link do download your latest song. I was checking on my phone in bed though.

Greg, your comparative clips sound great. And the white SG would look cool too, it would also wear nicely over that silverburst base layer.

Videos - so, are Tone Thread Videos the new thing? This could be amusing - I bet we've got some great gurning concentration faces between us.

Ha ha! That should DEFINITELY help. I have the amp now, but still the stock G12 T-75s. I can't justify buying £320 worth of speakers for my 1960A :D

Yeah, I've even read a thing on how to break in your V30. There's the initial breaking in:
1. Play clean and reasonable volume for a while, then add distortion for about 10 minutes.
2. Crank it till its starting to move playing clean then distortion for about 10 minutes.

After that it should just take a bit of use to gradually settle down.

They can take several months to really settle in. Even with a lot of play. But once they do.....

I'm just warning you - don't make any quick judgements on it until you've really broken it in.

Yeah, I've heard they can be a bit harsh at first. From the demos I've heard though even immediately they are a big improvement on the Rocket 50.

Sorry, I took it down. I only discovered recently that you can remove files that you upload to the site's hosting. I've wanted to delete other attachments before and wasn't able to (might have been me that was over-looking something). I took it down because I just wanted a couple of opinions on the guitar tone, but I didn't want it to stay up because it's far from finished. I'll put it back up. I've got 3 or 4 songs that I haven't got around to posting in Clinic yet. Just too lazy. Anyway, the opinions in this section are for more trust-worthy and important to me than over there.

Hey, speaking of painting a guitar (Greg, I'm surprised you want a color that hides imperfections. That sounds so un Greg-like to me...:D )....But anyway, it got me thinking. I like the finish of my Cherry Red Epi. But I don't like the look of my Gibson SGJ, which is a dull matt red finish. I'd love to get a shiny, Cherry red lacquer on it, a la the guitar that Miner's getting.

I've Googled "Guitar painting" and there are a lot of DIY tutorials. But I'm scared. Would you guys recommend getting my guitar painted? Would it change the sound at all?

Here's the Epi, which I like, and the second one is the Gibson, which I don't like.

I just want it white. White just happens to also hide imperfections....I assume. It works that way on cars. If you got a car with shoddy bodywork and wanna flip it? Paint it white. You want to show off immaculate lines? Paint it black. Black paint will reveal any wave or imperfection. White hides everything.

I don't know anything about painting guitars. I've been trying to learn some basics myself. But, I'd guess, this is a guess, that you could just clean it, scuff it lightly, and then clearcoat and buff it. It won't alter the tone of the guitar.

HAHA! That's the spirit! :D

But seriously, try the INSERT method instead of dragging and dropping. Might not work either, but it's how I always insert files.

Yeah, it's true. Same reason bodybuilders get as fucking dark as they can. Shows every detail, the darker something is.
