Bring Back Transfat!
Just got a Takaminie EG523SC. No, not an expensive guitar, but the most expensive acoustic I've ever bought.

I was a bit disapointed at the lack of a "sparkling ring" G thru E.

Don't know what the default strings form Takamine are. What's s good set of "sparkly" acoustic strings? Subjective, I know, but I'd be interested in hearing what the masses think. Thanks.

I just switched to D'addario EXP16's and i am quite happy with them. Have a nice overall physical feel and a nice sparkle to them.

What gauge strings? That is an important consideration as well as the type of winding.

I always recommend a wound third and as standard I fit D'addario EJ16'S unless asked for something else. I get through maybe 300 to 400 sets a year and rarely have issues with them. I use them on all my acoustics as well.

Strings are a matter of preference though so maybe try a few sets out and see what works for you.

I haven't got a clue as to gauge. Feels like .011, .015, .020 or heavier.

I know the question I'm not supposed to ask is....is this really just another low quality guitar, or should I be able to make it sound brighter?

Appreciate the input, guys.

sorry for hijacking the topic

I also use the exact same strings (ej16, 12) but in fact I am pretty inexperienced about steel-acoustic strings

I hate their initial, brand-new sound, they sound just strange but I love the sound they give after a couple of weeks (if I can encourage myself to play them)...

I do not want to increase the gauge to have less bright/more mellow strings...

so any recommendation for me?

by the way the guitar is a deep-bodied (aka salad bowl), center sound hole ovation.

Is it a brand new guitar?

I find really really new guitars a bit dull or honky for the first while. After a "play in" the bass seems to project better and the honk goes away, and I feel the high end gets a bit more life.

It's pseudo science at best, and I'll probably get flamed for suggesting it, but I like to place my new guitars on some speakers (laying flat, obviously, and padded a bit so nothing gets hurt/scratched), and blast some music "through" the guitar for a few days straight. It's kinda like giving it an extended playing in session, except you're not strumming for days!

I've had the best results with a chambered les paul, but every guitar seems to benefit a bit from it, at least to me. My accoustic seemed actually louder afterwards. There used to be a company called "timbre tech" who used to shake your guitar, but I guess they folded cos it's a bit weird really.

Just some food for thought. Otherwise I'd try different strings, different cores/winding and even wound or unwound G strings etc etc, but that's already been said. Not sure what's stock on your guitar but maybe a bone saddle/nut/bridge pins might give you what you're wanting?

I have an archtop acoustic that is naturally on the dull side, and after trying several brands, I found that martin strings had the brightest tone. I don't know that they're highly regarded or anything, and I don't know that they hold up as well as some others, but they are brighter sounding on my instrument at least.

I may be off base here but...What kind of nut and saddle are on it? I just put a bone nut and saddle on my cheapie acoustic and it made a world of difference. Cheap plastic nuts and saddles suck for tone. Just an idea....
