Tascam Boards Are Out Of Action

Billy, until Tascambbs comes back to life, this is the place.

A lot of the same talking heads are here at HRcom, although often under different screen names. [A Reel Person/LTU].

Anyway, Billy, back a week or so ago, you had asked me about efx and any other details about trying to get that "Beatles" sound on vocals, as you heard examples on my NWR page.

Well, besides what I already said, which is basically no vocal/recording efx except the occasional slapback echo, was that I glossed over the point...

... that MANY of the vocal tracks are either DOUBLE-TRACKED outright, or double-tracking that breaks into TWO PART HARMONIES, when needed. ALSO, I'm a big fan of USING MIC PLACEMENT, an APPRECIABLE VOCAL MIC DISTANCE, [f/i- arm's length], and USING THE ROOM ACOUSTICS of my humble little recording studio, aka "the office".

Other than that, there's little-to-nothing in the way of efx processing when I record, Beatles or otherwise. I just wanted to mention that, and complete the train of thought, re: your question.

Again, thanx for listening & thanx for asking.

Hey FM you'll always be Uncle Fester in my heart. (Uncle Fontster?) :)

I'm way way glad you gave me the straight dope on Tascam mixers VS. a regretable alternative (The B word!).
I've been checking some out anywhere I can and just as you said, they really are the real deal. (That could have been an expensive lesson.) I THINK I want a 302.

Congrats on your success over in the Mp3. area.
I have to DL the two tunes I haven't heard yet.

Hey Reel, If you meant me as the Billy that asked about a vocal track, then you're confusing me with someone else. (But thats ok 'cus given time I'm sure I'd ask the same stuff.) :)

All in all it's good to know you guys are around.

Gosh, someone asked me, and I thought it was you!

But, until the Tascambbs comes back, that will be a little mystery. Maybe tune in next week.

Anyway, that was the answer I meant to flesh out in detail, for...

SOMEONE[?].   ;) :)

Maybe Tascam M30, M308b, M312b, etc.,...

mixers, but no 302!;)

A dyslexic guy walks into a bra to get a drink and.....

Same guy was invited to a toga party and went dressed as a goat!!

Opps, I meant a 320 Reel, but Shhhh.

P.S. Anyone wanna buy a goat costume?
Come on, I only wore it once! :)

Here I am Dave ! Yes I am a new convert to the wonderful world of tascam, Well not really cause i have a 2340 and a3340
and when I was a young man I had a 22-4 with dbx.

Anyway i would be happier if i could get my 388 to work.
But atleast the 38 works and i have started a song on it, Old 70,s tune.
It would sound just great if i could play worth a crap!

And speaking of mixers I need a 312b to make things right.

Soon Soon.

And when is the Tascam board comming back up?

Herm,

Sorry to read you got that bum 388 that looked so nice. Did you contact the seller from e-bay and ask about a refund or, are you going to try and get it fixed?

Did you try it with a reel of tape yet to see about the transport issues? and what about the display? Still lights out?

Cheers!:)

Well i contacted the seller but he didnt contact me back. No suprise there. But I had pretty much decided to try and find someone around here to work on it or maybe drive it to chicago to get it fixed if possible.

I decided that Im willing to spend the money to get it fixed
(Within reason) that is cause its a pretty clean unit and I think it is worth the effort and money to get it going.
If everyone just through these out as soon as there was a problem it wouldnt be long before there where none.

Its just to neat of a unit to toss in the trash.

Gee Herm,...

I didn't catch that the 388's not working. Exactly what's the problem? They're [easy] to fix!;)

It looks like about over half of the power supply is gone.

Some things light and some dont when i turn the power on the overload light flash and the meters jump. and a few of the function lights work. When i turn it off the Right reel moves about
a sixteenth of an inch and thats about all it will do.
Oh and the capstan motor works when you lift the tape guide.
None of the meters or the display light.

I have been poking around in it and I have noticed that only two of the power transistors on the back panel get a little warm when it is turned on. That doesnt mean that is the problem but they are cheap enough I could change those myself and see what happens I guess.
What do you guy,s think?

CHECK ALL THE FUSES WITH AN OHM METER.

Those fuses are so old, that they can BREAK from the rigors of transit, without actually looking BLOWN. An ohm meter is the surefire way to test the fuses. They may not look defective to the naked eye. Been there/done that.

We'll get this thing fixed for'ya, Herm!

Well i did that first thing and even check them for voltage.

They are all in good shape

You'll need the manual to take it much further.

Avoid shock hazard. If you're not totally into DIY, it's WORTH IT to get shop repair, like you said. I assure you, it's worth saving.
They just don't make'em like that anymore!

Hey Herm who do you take your gear to for servicing in Chicago?

I dont have anyone yet Im still looking for someone around here.
But that,s starting to look like its not going to happen.
So i might try and find someone in peoria first before going up north to chicago.
Its 135 miles to chicago so thats kind of a last resort.

Another question for you 38 guy,s

I want to take the rack ears off my machine and was wondering if the screws for the rack ears are longer than what comes on the 38. I dont want to put the same screws back in and maybe run them in to some electronics and screw something up.
Hope that makes sense.

There is no need to put any screws back into the 38 after the ears are gone.

The holes are there exclusively for the ears only!

Bottom line;

Don't screw around!

A get well soon card...

Deltronics Audio 3149 N. Halsted St., Chicago, IL 60657 (773) 549-6635
Is the (Authorized) place "Everyone" seems to go to in Chicago, but honestly they seem to have a love/hate word of mouth kind of reputation. For me personally, they onced charged me like $150.00 for something I figured out I could have done myself (and from time to time still do) with my old '80's Porta 1.
They DID fix it like I brought it in for, so I'm not sure I can bitch.
Would I use them for my 38? Yeah, but I'd know going in to it that like most repair shops it can certainly take a few months.

It'd be soooooo cool if someone here could troubleshoot it down to a simple remedy for you.

ALSO: Rolf (I guess his name is)
at www.angelfire.com-electronic2-vintagetx is a repair guy that is really cool and will try to troubleshoot by email for you.
