Hi everyone.

Just got my hands on a 388 and as soon as I tried it seemed to be working but within very few minutes the transport started playing around and now it does not play. It rewinds and fforwads but it does not play. Sometimes it messes with ff as well. It rewinds more easily. As for playing, it engages and nothing. (I've seen some similar problems where it engages and maybe plays a bit and disengages, but mine just engages and gets sutck). Some comments I've see mention fuses or alignment...

Could anyone help me? It would be much appreciated.

Here's a link to a video of the problem..

Cheers

Check the fuses first, and the belt second.

Thanks man... Also, just one more thing I noticed. Compared to some videos online mine actually rw an FF much slower than usual. Would that help in diagnosing between fuses or belt?
Thanks

Not really sure. That could be a number of things. The belt, however, only controls the capstan I believe, so it only affects Play and not the other transport functions.

Do you have a multimeter? If you don't, you can get by with a cheapy multimeter from Radio Shack, since you'll just be testing continuity on the fuses.

I took a quick video of my friend's 388. Does this look familiar?

I have seen tape so old and sticky that it stopped a full size 1/2 inch machine after the tape had been run on it for a while. Make sure you havnt put so much gunk on the heads from old bad tape that it has clogged it all up
