I'm trying a new setup for friend and we want to use the tascam 388 for the mic pres.....And have them fed into a tascam 1800 USB record to a daw and master to tape..... We really need help routing the outs and ins........NewB in the house....

To be more specific.....We want to record to the computer and than send the stereo master to tape. The computer is being used for extra effects and editing. The 388 is being used for the mic pres and tape.

How would go about it.....

105 views and not one reply.....is everybody that snobby on here. Come on.....if it's basic knowledge share it...don't frown on someone who wants to do something right. Help. Share. Encourage.

Dood, chill. Don't expect resounding results from your post on a Friday (most musicians are busy doing cool stuff). 7 hours? You think the members that can help you are sitting on standby-just waiting for a chance to help someone out without charging? Most of the people who can help you the most, have lives and careers in the business.

I spent a half hour trying to see what outputs you had on the 388. I could not find a worthy pic, so I got caught up in other things I like to call 'my life'.

I can advise you with precision, the connection with the 1800. Just not a clue about your 388.

Why is it that you wish to use the 388 anyway? I know some love the 'sound' of tape, but I'm not sure that... You know what, nevermind.

What DAW/OS are you using with the 1800?

Your totally right. I here by declare my mega dochedom. And apologize for such impatient doucheyness. The software I'm using is reason 7. We just found out that we really cant use the tape cause th tape player needs to be fixed. All we Would like to at this point is use the tascam 388 for its preamps and record in Reason 7. We can always use protools ...How the heck do we use the 388 as a dedicated mixer and record all 8 tracks in our daw.

Best you can do as far as I can tell, is plug the outputs on the back (as if it were a stereo tapedeck and run that into an interface. The 8 channels would not be independent, just a stereo mix. For about 300, you can just move to a US-1800 (or something comparable), bypass the mixer all together and mix in the DAW. You could get a Mixer with a USB/Firewire connector and do it that way. But as far as using this, your only option is to push out through the outs (headphones, monitors, etc.)

Based on reading the manual I found, that is about it.

...

Each 388 channel has a mic input, line input and Pgm Assign buttons. Choose either Mic or Line for each input.
Using a combination of the Assign buttons 1-8 and the Pan control L/R, assign each input channel/strip to it's correspondingly numbered PGM (buss). On the rear panel there are PGM OUT 1-8. Using an RCA-1/4" cable/snake, connect from the PGM Outs 1-8 to the 1800's inputs on 1/4" Unbalanced connectors.

Coming from the puter outputs to tape is another thing entirely. The 388 tape section is optimized for 8 track recording onto 1/4" tape @ 7.5 IPS. A true mastering recorder is typically 2 tracks onto 1/4" tape @ 15 IPS.

Nonetheless, if you're recording and mixing ITB and developing a stereo mix in software, connect the L/R output channels of the 1800 to any 2 Inputs of the 388, assign to any 2 PGM Busses in L/R format and record to tape on 2 tracks.

:spank::eek:;)
