Hey there. I was wondering what would be the best DBX units to use? Also is it possible to bounce more than twice internally without have to mix down to another deck? For example; record 6 tracks bounce to stereo, record over those 6 tracks, then somehow bounce all 8 tracks to stereo, then record over those 6 tracks.

Any properly working dbx I unit. They are all compatible. The 38 was designed to control the stock TASCAM DX4D's but any stand-alone simultaneous encode/decode dbx I device will do the same job.

I use the DBX 150. You would need 4 of them. The DBX 150X will work as well but they don't use RCA jacks. If you use the DX-4D you would need two of them but they are harder to find. If you end up going with the 150X Lo fi love had a few he was wanting to sell a few weeks ago.

I saw a couple of Dx4ds on ebay. How does the 38 sound with or without the Dbx?

Assuming everything is working & set up properly, all narrow format machines are much quieter with dbx.

I've used mine with and without NR and I can say as far as my setup goes their is a huge difference between the two. With the NR the hiss is cut by about 3/4 It really makes a difference.

<snip> is it possible to bounce more than twice internally without have to mix down to another deck?.

Yes. You would mix at the console and feed the mix to whatever tracks always leaving a guard band track between adjacent tracks.

For example; record 6 tracks bounce to stereo, record over those 6 tracks,

You cannot bounce to an adjacent track. Leave a guard band track.

IE: bounce tracks 1,2,3,4,5 to track 7 and 8. Track 6 is not bounced as part of a stereo bed because it would feedback during the bounce. But otoh if you had track 6 ONLY appearing on track 8, you could conceivably do a 6 track bounce to 2 tracks because track 7, even though you would be recording on it, would act as a guard band track.

then somehow bounce all 8 tracks to stereo then record over those 6 tracks.

Uhmm ? I don't understand this.

Ok (sorry I am very bad at explaining but I'll try)

Basically I want to get as many as 16 tracks on an 8 track recorder.
Lets say I record 6 tracks on the tascam 38. I would bounce those six to tracks to 7 and 8 (stereo). Then I would Record over the previous 6 tracks.

My question is... How would I create MORE tracks to record?

Here is one possible thing I thought of...
I bounce ALL tracks (the 6 new tracks I recorded and the 7th and 8th track) to
my other recording deck (teac 3340) tracks 1 and 2 (stereo). Then I would somehow send tracks 1, and 2 (stereo) to back to tracks 1 and 2 on the 38
and record 6 more tracks. In order to do this... I would need a better mixer (I have a tascam m208) or maybe it will work, i'd just have to unplug and connect rcas.

This would work but there is no guarantee you'd like the results. Even with dbx, you would have some noticeable generation loss with all that bouncing. You will also increase the low-end "head bump" with every premix you do.

You could always invest in a 16 track machine. I know the 16 or 24 trackers are more expensive.
