sound hole pickups

there's this big hole in my sound... is it possible to fix it with a soundhole pickup?

no, serious: the eq of my e-acoustic got broken and even before that I thought about installing a soundhole-pickup because the stock piezo-pu sounded a bit boxy... no QUITE boxy.
a soundhole pickup works quite the same way as a normal singlecoil of an electric guitar does, right? so would I need some kind of amplifier in my e-acoustic or can I go straight from the soundhole-pickup to the amp?

You can go straight into the amp with a sound hole pick-up.

Word of advice, though.... spend the extra $$ and get a higher quality pick-up. None of the sound hole pick-ups are as good as mic'ing an acoustic, but the cheapo pick-up's really kill your tone.

I wouldn't use it for "quality-recordings"... just for live (although I still need a band first ).

but a soundhole pickup still would sound better than a shitty piezo-pu, right?

Six: That's bull.

You can get great tone with both soundhole pickups as well as piezo pickups.
Take your guitar to the nearest luthier and he'll probably have an idea or two.

Speaking for myself: I have always been quite fond of the solutions Fishman (www.fishman.com) offers.

The EQ has died? You have an onboard box? Check out the replacement EQ boxes that are starting to pop up. I'd agree with Antikal; Fishman has a bunch of solutions and a local luthier should be able to implement them; but one is to replace the box controls with a new set, hook up the existing pickup(s) and hit the road.

If you really want to experiment with new pickups, they can be expensive but very nice: A few that come to mind are the Fishman rare earth blend, the Sunrise magnetic pickup, and the PUTW transducers, which are probably leading the pack. I have had very good luck retrofitting my old Taylor with with the B-Band system; dual source - an undersaddle ribbon transducer and an internal condenser on a gooseneck, each signal running through a small onboard preamp. I use an external blender and eq. Each of these options requires some sort of preamp, which brings me back to the first point. If the preamp is all that is shot, replace it and move on.
