On the Oktava's be sure to audition as many as possible (bad QC).

You may want to add the Studio Project C4's to your shortlist.
The QC of Studio Projects and Rode is much higher than Oktava.

I am leaning more and more towards 451's but it seems like I will be in the $500 - $600 range which is a bit more that I was hoping to spend.

I am also trying to learn a bit more about the Rodes and Studio Project lines of matched pairs.

Given that one of my original criteria is that the mics hold their value, AKG just fairs better as a much better known entity, but now that I am staring this decision in the face I may wind up thinking much more about $$:performance.

Had the first opportunity to use the MD 421 on stage last night. Wow what a difference from the SM 58, clear and smooth what a treat. Interesting that the bass rolloff works best at M or one notch back for recording, but live it was just the opposite, it was better around th S. Great mic and so versatile, now if I can get the vocalist to work on using different rolloff settings for different songs we will be cooking with gas.

That was probably because the singer was eating the microphone.
Radio DJ's normally use the "S" setting for broadcasting work.

That last line was suppose to be Price to Performance...
