Sounded just fine to me....A ton of Grammy songs were recorded with sm 57 and 58's...Don't let gear acquisition syndrome (GAS) slow your goal...recording your music.
I agree to the "wing and a prayer" approach to a degree. Just getting stuck in can be liberating but eventually everyone runs into problems and then an informed, systematic M.O. can save the day. And when you do get great results it is very useful to know HOW you did it!
