Recording Troubleshooting

Sm57s have switches, don't they? Make sure it's on. Also, (again) did you make sure you're set to Microphone on Audacity, with the input volume up?
 
I'm guessing the pre only has an XLR output. Do you have anything else that you could plug it into to check for signal? Or do you have a multimeter/voltmeter?

He's using the line-in input after the pre. Would Audacity need to be set to microphone in that case?
 
Yeah, whenever I use Audacity through the line in I need to use Microphone. Line in registers as the headphone output on mine.

ps mine doesn't have a switch(the SM57). So, I just assumed it was "on" once it was plugged into the preamp
 
Oh, alright. I thought maybe it did since my 58 did, but it's also 20+ years old.
