Eliminating mic hum with balanced cables

There are plenty of overhead fed homes here in Suffoll. My town is pretty modern - fibre cable passes every home in an early town adoption scheme - yet some of the main roads have overhead, Causes grief when more than one person on a pole wants a car charger.

I have had 4 macbooks (plus a G5, various imacs and a mini mac - and none of them have ever had hum issues when plugged directly into a mixer or PA - ever! I have also had lots of windows laptops and few have been hum free. Plus ALL Dells are going to hum. No idea why, they just do.

My old Dell hummed with the power supply connected. My newer one didn't.

In the performing arts center where I work, the headphone output of one of the iMacs buzzes when connected to the compact Midas mixer. Using one of those cheap behringer USB-RCA interfaces solves it.
