Reason Guru Now In The House!!!

the upgrade is worth it as far as i'm concerned.the m-class mastering suite.....is ....well...sweet.hahathe best part of it is how you can control the stereo field. you can take the highband and low band seperately and control how wide they are. makes the music sound 100 times more open. theres a bunch of preseats or you can make your own. the combinatoer is o.k. i don't have much use for it. but i suppose it's useful for some folks. and the small line in mixer comes in handy when you need only a few inputs and not a whole mixer.but theres no bass/treb on the small one so the control on the main mixer effects all 6 on the small one.
alot of new sounds in the soundbanks.they definately took in all the criticism about not being made for hip hop.because this time around they have alot of hip hop oriented tools, loops etc. alot of new rex loops if thats your thing. theres some pretty sweet sounding guitar stuff goin on this time around to.
i'd say for the price of the upgrade...$129 it's well worth it.

whatsup with calling yourself a "guru"...

self-chosen titles aside..welcome to the board.

I've been using reason for quite some time now... and I think it's one of the best things that ever happened to computer based music production.
One thing I don't like all that much is the sound of the program itsself, but hey, there's always rewire, right?

Im waiting for my new PC to arrive, but I'm gonna hook that shit up and rock reason & cubase side-to-side...

even though I'm getting more and more into the hardware side of things... I love Reason!!!

Haven't checked out version 3 yet...but I'm curious about the whole upgrade...

hey if ur workin for propellerhead, tell those dudes to put a 8 band parametric on the next version....the 2 band is wack

oh and does anybody have the XXL bass refill?...or any sub-bass refills

No I don't work for P-Heads... I'd make beats and never work on what I'm supposed to! And why would anyone need an 8-band Parametric if you're not mixing!! R3 has a new eq in it so maybe they heard you after all... But to be totaly honest, I've used the eq's in Reason maybe all of 4 times!! Its all about sound choices!!! My advice would be spend more time choosing sounds that fit your overall vision and rely less on the eq to shape the sound...

Reason 2.5 controller

i was just on the propellerheads website checking out the new features in 3.0 and i saw that it said they just added the capability to use external controllers...i thought this was already possible in 2.5? did i just read it wrong or does it mean something else? does the behringer b-control fader bcf2000 work with 2.5? if not, are there any that do that are within a reasonable price range?

EQ'ing the track is an essential part of musicproduction. If it doesn't need it, it doesn't need it, but it's rare. When we "the producers" shuvs all those frequencies together, all focused to come out of the same source (the speakers) it's highly unlikely that you won't experience some freq. clashing. Of course it's not going to be often that the bass and the high notes of a guitar wrestles over the same frequencies, but the more you fill the sonic spectrum with sounds to beef up the track, the higher the risk of clashing. Also worth taking into concideration is the fact that alot of midrange instruments can produce some low end freqs and they can clash with the bass. Even if they don't clash they will still be there, eating off of the freqs for the bass, and in the end you'll loose that all important headroom for the bass.

Spend more time learning your way around the EQ...it will pay off in the end.
R3 has a new EQ with a 30Hz low cut, a low shelf, 2x parametric dials and a high shelf.
It's about time they did something with that issue, as well as the compressor issue. They sucked, but now it's a whole lot better.

My opinion: Compression Overused!!! EQ if it were a woman it would be a cheap crack whore!!! What ever happened to picking the right sounds??? Not to name drop, but I've sat at Record One in L.A. and watched Dre take two hours to sample or find 3 kicks to blend for the sound he gets!! My RUFF mixes sound better than most folks finals in Reason and I DO NOT USE THE EQ's (Only the ones on the mixer! Hehe). I'll refer you again to my soundclick site: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/5/bigrushmusic.htm "Gotta Realize" and "Ohh!" are mixes STRAIGHT OUT OF REASON and no eq inserted anywhere!!! Listen then tell me eq shaping of the kicks, snares and bass is absolutely needed!! I'm glad there are eq's and finalizer type modules in R3 now, but to be honest, learning how to mix the sounds themselves before resorting to eq is far more benificial in the long run (Your actual milage may vary)

Allthough I know I need my head examined, I did feel that "Ohh!!!" beat hehe

Great tracks, no doubt, but they wouldn't hurt to be eq'ued a bit though. The high end of your tracks is a bit soft. Allthough...your beats sound better than alot of what I've heard, I see it as impressive that you steer clear of eq's and end up with this. No doubt you're skilled, but as I said...eq is an essential part of production in itself. It's not always needed, but can very often improve the track. Damn! That "Ohh!!!" beat, that's some kick ass shit right there man.

What's your view on exciters, multiband compression and stereo enhancer? Not needed?
I'm gonna let this one go though, cause you do use eq...you just don't use the inserts...Pretty much the opposite of me, I use the inserts and not the mixer unit eq...

Thank you very much 92!! I appreciate the compliment... I think I needto clarify myself a bit. I use eq (although very judiciously) when I am mixing projects. The API eq is one of my favorite eqs and the Nomad eq plug ins I couldn't get by without. But in Reason, I've found that for the sound I'm going for, the two cheesy little eqs are enough! HAHAH It forces me to find a sound that fits rather than using the eq to make it fit. That in the long run makes it easier for either myself or the person performing the final mix to stay true to my artistic vision and not change it when they add their version of how things should be buy cutting and adding frequencies. In my opinion it makes it sound different and not better. U know your stuff 92 no disputing that!! I think you'll also agree that at the end of the day you want to hear more of you in the final mix and not the mix engineer.

Now for the kicker!! I use the Waves L2 Maximizer and the SHuffler on nearly every mix. if the mix doesn't have enough punch, I will go bac and remix it. The easy way out I know would be just to add a little 5k to brighten things up, but why do that when Reason is Total Recall!! I love this damn thing!!!

Heres an interesting story: I recently went to a studio in Atlanta to meet with a vocalist named Jason Weaver (Played young Michael Jackson and sang the hook on Chingy's "One Call Away") I was there to play some tracks and just vibe. I pulled out my scratched up HP ZD7000 laptop, and my Nuendo Audiolink 96. They asked me for my CD, mind you the room is packed with people. I asked the engineer for a pair of 1/4 in. plugs to patch in to the board with. Everyone looked like "what is this clown doin??" I opened up Reason and played the tracks right from the program and blew their frikkin heads off!!! The stuff was so loud and big (of course I had the screen sitting so everyone could see!! HAHHA). I told the at which point it became more questions about the music and more about the program that was used to create it! If Reason were the Gospel, we'd all be Billy-freakin'-Graham!!!! HAHAHAHA

dats how u do it fammo!!

keep dat laptop grindin homey. reason IS the gospel. preach on!

....if i may add to the previous comments............having your own sounds in reason is a big plus!!!! redrum has never been the same since i imported my mpc drums. rewire is a must also.

holla.

Where is a good place to get MPC Samples to import into REDRUM?

Just curious,I am just now starting to use REDRUM more..............

I agree on the statement about me wanting to hear more of my shit as a whole ,and not just settle for what the sound engineers golden ears thinks about the track.
I want my sound...not his sound...
I used to take my mixes from Reason over to Forge and finish them of there, but right now I'm trying to get what I can from Reason, allthough I can't really get the mixes by without strapping an L2 over it. For some reason I trust that more than the maximizer issued with the new MClass in R3. It wouldn't hurt to get a multiband compressor in R3 either, but what R3 lacks...I can make up for using Rewire or just process it after bouncing the track down.
Basically we're kind of on the same track here BigRush, we just have a different perspective on the matter. That's what makes us human hehe What a bore it would be if everybody were the same. Thanks regarding my expertise in the field.

pympwell:
Good point...From day one when I first got Reason 1 I have steered clear of the samples that comes with it. It's not exactly packed with great samples imo (not the perc section), but I steered clear cause everyone that had R1 back then had the same samples...now...how could any track get a personal touch to it when everybody else could do the same thing? We're at R3 now, and I could probably make use of some of the samples by processing them to make them more "me", but why do that when I have quality samples that I have gathered thruout the years?
Some "freshies" in the game complains about not getting what they want...hmmm...could it be that you're fresh, lack the knowledge to layer sounds and use crappy samples? A bit of everything. Simple is applealing to freshies, so they don't bother to fish for better samples. "Go fishing! and thou shall catch" hehe

BigRush:
Funny story by the way. Alot of people dog Reason, and for that they will pay.

Amen Brother!!! You're absolutely right!! Hint if you used to use the MPC or another drum machine to make beats, convert the sounds to wav or aiff using Awave. I batch converted about 60 ZIP disks in about 4 hrs.... And the bonus is if you ever lose your cpu drive, u have the disks as a backup!

wow you produced a whole CD and some tracks are available on a micro-label complilation! Holy Shit! Stop the Presses!

the more important question is how much platinum I have on my teeth chump change mutha!

Ok "sweet"nubs... I am going to assume that was aimed at me. Since you already know we rap cats are nuts and we love beef anyway, I'll oblige you! I have to this date 18 gold and platinum records on my fukin wall!!! Some of which I did when u probably were in Junior High school. Some of the stuff I did that I'm most proud of never went gold or platinum... Maybe one of which you may know of: ICE CUBE DEATH CERTIFICATE. I'm the dude named Rashad from the Boogiemen on that CD!!! If you aren't familiar with that CD you shouldn't be in this conversation in the first fukkin place!!! If you need me to asswipe I'll post my whole disography here for you to see!! Or maybe I'll just tell you my name for you to Google!!! (Can we do the same with your name?) You'll notice that everything was lovely til you came in spreading hate in the spot! Unless you have more plaques than me (and can prove it) sit ya scrub ass down and learn some shit!!!

Where is the world going man!?
I have a hard time believing that someone would actually enter a forum just to start beef...what are you? a forumthug? It's not like this is going to go anywhere...you say some shit, he say some shit, you say, he say, you say, he say...
I sense alot of bitterness here sweetnubs, put that on the shelf when you enter the forum! So far this thread has been great, then you came along...and dude...I think you need to scrape your face of the ground and leave...it's obvious you lost face on this one...
