Public Mix Contest #8!!!!!!!!

That would be OK, but if people had to pay I am afraid they might not do it. We were planning on offering up like a $50 prize or something ourselves. I know it's not a lot, but what do you get from the other pmc's? :D

Also, these tracks would be recorded on a nice large console with some pretty decent equipment. Especially if my Neve's and Telefunken have materialized by then. The track count may be fairly high as well so it might be a large download since I like to overtrack and just axe things come mixdown.

Omg Let Me In!!

HEy Who do have to suck up to, to be in this "contest"?!? I'm at home, having nothing to do, and this is exactly what i'm looking for! Can i download the files somewhere?

They wouldnt HAVE to pay i guess...but if they wanted in on a little side pot or something...and again...i was just throwing out a number...we could vote on it or something if people were actually up for it...

It'll be a couple more days, probably Saturday.

Cool song, I would have liked to mix this one more so than some of the others, figures lol.

There's 2 or 3 mixes that stand out to my ears, but not by a heck of a lot.

It sounds like there were some liberties taken here and there with the material, but nothing I have a big problem judging (yet). What were the editing rules for this go 'round anyhow? I guess I can review the thread.

Only rule was not to replace parts or add to the arrangement Doug.
Thanks BTW for your efforts man, you rule.

Chris, what about copying and pasting a part for delay type effects? The part wasn't replaced, but and was a track that was already there, not a new track. But I can also see how that would be considered "adding to the arrangement" :(

Actually, the rule was "No changing the material.". Later clarified by Chris as:

"Well, you cant take my snare out and replace it with... saaayyyy.......a fart recorded with a 6000 dollar condenser. As great as that fart may sound, id have to say NO because that would be (drum roll please) "CHANGING THE MATERIAL".

There was really no clarification around making modifications to the arrangement.

Cheers.

Well seeing as this should be about the sound quality of the mix the little embelishments shouldn't come into play.

OK ten years after this was posted....
finished a session early and did a mix.

Here it is:
http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1860&alid=-1

I listened to a fair view of the mixes already there. Very interesting.
I didn't spend a lot of time on it, about 40 minutes start to finish. But the reason I did a mix was basically to show that you can do a lot of different things other than balance tracks to the best of your ability. Mixing can also be interpretation, putting your own
“feel” into a track.

A couple of comments on the recording itself:

It is generally not a good idea to mess around with the drum tracks to such an extent.
I don’t know if some of the tracks were gated or just edited, but for a real mix you’d have to spend hours putting things right. For instance – a snare with a cymbal hit right after it on the snare track – then clean. In the mix this would result in a phasing cymbal.
Whoever played drums should have been told to adjust the tension on the kick pedal – there are a lot of “slap-back” noises, out of time and unwanted. Those are crucial things to notice when you are tracking.
I would love to see a drawing of the set-up of microphones on the drum kit. This was one of the few times I really didn’t understand the placement by listening to the tracks, especially the relationship between room and overhead mics.

If you guys want to do another mix-off in the future, I’d be pleased to provide a song / tracks.

I dont spend any great deal of time on what i offer up to the public.
Besides, if it were a superb recording it wouldnt be as much of a challenge.
But whatever, im stoked you participated man.

Have a nice day! :) :) :) :)

please please please upload the tracks!!! I know it's after the deadline, but i would love to give it a try!!

Is it too late for me to upload my final mix? I had to upgrade my daw, and I had a few problems. I don't want to cause problems to you guys, so just tell me if it's yeah or nay

Congrats, DS! I really dug your mix man, you did some great work with the vocals, perfect compression, IMO. And thanks for the judging man...really helps me out!

Tied for 4th...wow I can't believe that...I'm not as deaf as I thought then! :D

If I can bug you...do you have any of the listening notes at all? I've never really mixed much before, so I'd really appreciate any feedback you can give me.

Again, thanks to Doug, Finster, NL5, and all of you guys for running these...I'm looking forward to PMC9!

Wow. 4th. And that was a preliminary mix. Heh. I never got to go back over it. Awesome.

Thanks, everyone.

Congrats to DS and all of you guys!
