I'd say that's too quick an attack for this bass track.

what would you suggest would be a more suitable attack time? I still have a lot of homework to do as far as compression is concerned.

thanks

This was a fun one to play with. I wasn't too fond of the keys in parts though.

So here's my entry

Hey man...I love the way you got the the "swell?" effect when everything comes in together after the break at the very beginnnig of the song... Any tips on how you did that?

I wish I had the skills to answer that, I'm sure others will.

I think this will vary depending on the threshhold, ratio and whether you are using a peak or rms compressor (and how you think the track should sound of course). An rms compressor should allow for a more aggressive attack because it's slower to respond. The same would be true for a low ratio beause it doesn't make as much of a difference.

Maybe try setting your attack as slow as it will go and then sweep it back to taste.

just for the hell of it I used...

attack 70 ms
release 220 ms
threshhold -26 db
ratio 9:1

with an rms compressor

This is without normalizing the bass track and after filtering some stuff out below 120 hz.

Probably totally inept settings. I don't really have much of a clue what I'm doing.

Those 2 posts make this thread funny, AND informative.

Ok I guess my post never posted. GRRRR

Anyway I put up everyone';s mix thus far. If you would like to verify my work (as I have been traveling the past few days) visit here and make sure the one up is the correct mix (verify the date and time)

Hey - You missed mine, but thats OK cause I think I might have to redoo it anyway. I picked up a pair of Mackies this weekend and I think I want to remix now  :D :)

Hey fin.

Thanks for the reply. I didnt get much of a response to my mix so i wasnt sure if it was in the right direction.

It was really funny that we had the same idea with the intro. I spent about two hours on the mix and got back to hear yours with close to that same idea.

I didnt feel their needed to be a building up at the pause after the intro because i felt what really created the feeling of buildup and intensity was the silence. Having everything stop in silence seemed to give me a little more feeling of anticipation. Like hearing it all low fi and then stopping, and you know its gotta come in huge and your just waiting there in silense.

You felt the vocals were up in front too much? Thats interesting because i felt they were just right. When i didnt have to do any EQ to them and i could make them fit right with the other instruments and keeping it part of the whole i thought it worked perfectly.

I felt the BBE Sonic Maximizer made it sound to tinny and harsh in the highs. Really fatigueing the ears without adding significant quality difference. I stuck with good old fashion fine tuning EQ. It really didnt take much, just enough to find places for everything in the mix. The snare was probably the most difficult because i didnt want a harsh crack because i feel that takes the balls out of it. I thought just a nice top end snap made it come alive.

Then the final thing that i did was put a little mastering multi band compressor on it. Spent a little bit of time tuning this so i was getting the frequencies that were creating problems without sucking life out of it. However, it did limit the dynamics of the sound in general which was my biggest worry. But i really felt it needed it to help smooth out weird frequency nodes and balance everything as a whole. I tried to find a happy medium with it. The compression isnt to noticeable except the loss of dynamics.

It was alot of fun and i would have taken more time on it if i was really keen on winning. But it was just something i wanted to do since i havnt really posted any of my work on here and i thought it would be a good thing to have comparably. This is why im probably not going to open it back up and make changes on it.

I really recommend you listen to it and compare it with others mixes in the car.

So what i feel happy about with my mix. The fact i was able to restore some highs and take out muddiness without using a BBE sonic maximizer or making the high frequencies harsh. What i dont like is the destroying of dynamics it took to get it there.

I cut the guitar fade just before the break then reversed it.

Oooh... This sounds like fun. :) I'll be dowloading right away. Count me in.

final mix

OK

I've done as much damage as I can.
Man this learning curve thing could melt your brain.
This being my first computer mix and all.
I've learned a ton of new stuff breaking out the studio box and jumping into the computer box.

The only problem now is that I have to add a computer to the studio. ahhhh must have more gear and less beer. (sigh)

So...here's my final mix

By the way, the other final mixes so far are really darn good/great.
You guys rock!!!

Thanks guys for the opportunity!

Sweet Contest #5 will start when this one is judged and complete. :) 39 tracks. 1.27GB of Data uncompressed. :)
Can I recommend posting the tracks compressed with
FLAC instead of zipping them, for the sake of those poor folks out there that are really planning on downloading this over a modem? The tracks for this contest would have been a 139 MB download if they were FLAC compressed, instead of the 238 MB download they were now. While not a big deal for anyone on broadband, that's about 5 1/2 hours of saved download time for someone on 56k.

Assuming the same compression ratios for your 1.27GB, that's 860MB zipped vs. 500MB as FLAC, so a 20 hour savings for modem users.

On the other hand, are there really any modem users that are considering it? :)

Back on topic for this thread: I just found this site and contest, grabbed the tracks, and hopefully will get around to getting a mix together and posted...

Hey,

Decided i wanted to try a different approach to the mix so i pulled it up for a quick remix.

I dont really think this is better or worse than the first one just a different style. Some may like this one better.

Its pretty heavily saturated and my goal was to make this one sound big instead of clean.

I also lessened down on the vocals as a suggestion to fin.

I messed up my effect at the beginning of the song and got too lazy to fix it :D. I told you it was just a quicky less than an hour mix.

Let me know what you think though.
