Public Mix Contest #4!!!!

I have wondered that myself...more than one person has asked me what language they are speaking...lol

There are no lyrics.
I improved those vocals to compile a composite rough draft of the phrasing and melody i wanted.
That is what you are hearing.

I have some open questions -

Basically, I've learned over many years that when I get "confused" or "untidy" with a mix, or I start getting "competing tracks", I can strip it back to Bass, Drums, and settle those, then add in whatever feature instruments are over these, and achieve a better mix. Sometimes EQ can assist with separation - punching out separate frequency bands for separate components. or resolving converging formants in foreground and background instruments.

With this sort of Mix Contest material I find that there is nothing that can be done to find the pivotal tracks in the mix. The bass and drums compete in most places, the guitar and keys don't mesh, and the vocals are again, full of so much activity that the pivotal part of the mix becomes elusive.

So what technique works here? There is no other musical genre where this much bass and drum activity exists in such high density (semiquaver kick and bass riffs throughout).

I'm really confused about the structure of this stuff, and the optimal approach(es) for mixing.

It's a dumbass question, sure. Honestly, I'd like to hear what the pros here think.

This sounds pretty good. I was playing with the lower volume guitar thing at first, this is making me rethink my current approach. Really brings tha bass out. Flip side of that is that the mix sounds too "down the pipe". Guitars are pretty dark.

the ambience is intentional.

i took some live performances of "nightwish" as reference, cause I love their keyboards in the background.

But the presence is a little bit more decent in the mix.

I like the overall balance a lot, vocals cut through too. Not a lot of energy in the drums, but that may be a trade-off with some other things. Mix leans a bit to the bassy, warm side.

Unless of course amybody has any insight
And points out something blatantly wrong...

I'm used to having a max of 6 tracks or so...
So this is really tough for me...

Sounds good. Maybe my ears are fried, but it seems like most of the mixes I"m listening to could use more air, this one too.

Nice kick :) (how you guys do that is beyond me)

GOD! time drags after you get your mix in. I wish this would end now so we can get on to #5

Anyone got any comments on mine? The more I listen the more the bottom end bugs me and I think it's a bit overbrite too

Still burning in my new Wharfdale Diamond Pro 8.2a's....taking a bit more getting used to than I thought they would
 
the top end is a little shrill. Sort of scooped in the upper mids maybe?
 
doh, I was encoding to a different file name, so nothings changed in my file. That explains some things.

had to download the file to play it for some reasons, maybe just a blip in the net.

Refreshing top end, a little unbalanced and too stereo, but it's really nice hearing the splashes for a change (they're buried in my mixes).
Good bass. Guitars aren't sitting right for me.

This IS my final mix.

Lot's of problems big and small, but I think I'm better off to see how this one fairs up and start fresh on the next one.

I think I"m at least starting to figure out where to start. Mixing live bass and drums has been an uphill road.

Certainly the most balanced blend of instruments ive heard from you to date Doug. At least as far as this genre is concerned.
Only thing>> it was a tad dark.

This is what i heard here.

1.Gating. im not exactly sure what you gated (vox maybe) but it had a very disconcerting attack and release.
2.Overall tone. Like no other is a Lemon mix. You manage to get a certain high end frizzle from your Saber that (a) ive never heard in any mixes B4 (b) I cant tell if i dig on or not....because on the good side, it is nice and bright. On the bad side? It can be downright ear fatiguing.
3. A better sense of balance. With the exception of the drums being a tad weightless the instrument balance was pretty good.
